Rescue

Hi.  Long time no see.  The internet is a freaky place and when you think about posting your entire life on it you can see how ... well maybe you wouldn't want to do that.

That said.  There's some stuff about the new puppy I'd like all in one place so ...

Sometime in November, someone I know on Facebook shared a post from a dog rescue of Labradoodle puppies that needed a home.  I originally wanted Legend, I believe.  But after emailing a bit she was already spoken for.  They emailed back that Myth and one of the boys was available.  We wanted a girl.

I believe it was this post, I saw below.

Just before Christmas I sent over the completed application and the video tour of our home and we were matched up with Myth.  We picked her up on Jan 4.

So Stacy what started this post?

Well the rescue that we worked with was back at the Mill auction this weekend, and some of the stories are just heart breaking.  Doodles and blue merle toy dogs are in high demand, and the young females go for ridiculously high prices.  It's been eye opening.  Over $6k for one corgi blue merle that had been pregnant already at 8mo.  They advertise the boys in the weirdest, grossest ways.  And all of this made me want to know a little bit more about what the story was with Rebel's mom.

The only post I found about her purchase is the one shown below.  This rescue appears to mostly work with Pugs and that sort.  But really they're all over the place.  Their mission and general operation seems to be  crowd-funding to buy dogs from mill auctions and then place them with homes.

Now.  Stacy.  How did you become so much an "adopt don't shop."

I'm cheap.  I can not believe what people are getting for pets.  It's ridiculous.  We started looking at doodles for the same reason every else did - allergies.  But around here they go for thousands of dollars.  I can afford it.  Of course I can.  But I won't do it.  I couldn't stomach it.  I wanted to adopt a dog in the first place (with Mavvy) but all the rescues I talked to wanted home visits and didn't want to let us adopt a dog because we both worked full time.

Ridiculous.

So we ended up at one of the festivals in Addison where they were doing an Adoption Day.  Guess what happens on adoption days?  They cancel most of their rules and just hand out dogs.  Because it's that or euthanizing in many cases; because they are over crowded.  Anyway.  That's how we got Mavvy.  Who's original name was River, and who was found with her sibling in a storm drain and who got parvo and who lived.  Mavvy, if I had to describe her in one word, was always just a grateful dog.

Rebel?

Not so much.

Rebel is blessed with the ignorance of comfort.  She has no idea how her life could have turned out.

Rebel will not look too much like her mommy up there.  She is 1000% Labrador.  She is goofy and happy and energetic and waggy.  She loves food.  But.  That may also be because she was starving.  Since I got the busy bowl and am feeding her 3/4 a cup 3x a day she's doing better.  But she's still extremely food motivated.  Potty training only started working after I gave her treats.  Now she pretty much potty's on command for treats.

We're still having accidents because what I haven't figured out is how to get her to signal in the house.  Don't shout get a bell at me - everyone is.  I will probably do this.  (As I typed this she walked to the back door and scratched on the door! Wahoo!)

BB8 keeps shrinking!

So she wasn't an entirely planned thing.  We'd been talking about getting Mavvy a friend for a few years, but then Mavvy hurt her knee and stopped getting around and it seemed mean.  Then I saw that post and it just all kind of worked out.

She's not so much a doodle, but I wasn't probably ever going to be a person that has a designer bred dog.  I can't have Shelties or Aussies (the hair drives me nuts).  And what other bred would I want?  I'm not a small dog person.  I'd have a beagle or a hound but Dad was afraid we'd get one that howled.

So we ended up with Rebel.  Who probably is what we were supposed to have anyway.  She's a ton of work and I spend all day walking around making sure I didn't miss any accidents in the house.  I have to teach the kids how to play with her (before they get mauled) and I pray that Mavvy has asserted herself enough that she'll still be the alpha when Rebel has 40lbs on her.

I wanted a big dog.  I wanted a dog to run with.  She will definitely be able to do that in a few months.  I wanted a big dog for when Lewis travels.  I just like big dogs.

I have to remind myself almost daily ... still only two months old, still only two months old.

I personally don't think dogs are capable of being good until they are at least three months old.  So for her age ... I think she's doing pretty okay.

And Mavvy loves her.  If begrudgingly.  I am fairly convinced she would miss her if she were gone.

Anyway that's the big news around her.  It's all puppy all the time.

She's a great distraction from the fact that my baby starts kinder this year.  Which is sort of her purpose.  ;)
