Summer Is Here
We looked outside and checked the weather. Overcast and possible rain ... that means it won't be too hot at the ballpark! Let's go see the Astros at the Rangers!
The Astros are Lewis and my's team. We don't cheer against the Rangers, our hometown team, unless they are playing against the Astros. This used to be a lot easier because the Astros were NL and Rangers were AL and only played together during interleague play. Well now they are in the same dumb league (ask me about the designated hitter) so we have more conflicts. But when the Astros are playing in town ... we try to go!
Or we used to. Pre-kids. Baseball games or any progame really, is hard for kiddos. And as you remember we just took the kids to their first minor league game last summer. It went well. They are a year older. We're trying to get G super excited about baseball, it's June and the Rangers are 14 games behind the leader (ASTROS!!) so tickets are cheaper, so off we went.
And we picked up grandma too!
It was super hero night at the park so that was fun. They kept putting the Rangers players on the screen as super heros. David really loves the Hulk. It's Texas so there were a fair amount of Astros fans. We sat near some. I tried to get the boys to cheer for the Rangers, but G is still at the I want to be like my dad stage so he was really conflicted. They know it's their hometown team but Mom and Dad cheer for the 'Stros so what's a young boy to do?
He really loves watching for strikes and balls and homeruns. I kept telling him stuff about the game. I joked at one point to Lewis that he might have to untell him a lot. I know stuff about baseball, but I'm no expert. I was trying to tell him that batters strike out a lot, maybe even 7 out of 10 times and they'd still be considered great batters.
Well Lewis didn't like that. There's a lot of ways to get out at the plate, he says. Better to ground out, fly out or out at first base. You don't want to strike out.
Nuance.
Anyway.
We didn't get home until 11PM and we left in the bottom of the 7th with the Astros up 5-4. The Astros are crushing some baseball right now. They are at like .714 for the year with a record of 40-16. The best in baseball by like 8. Best in their league by a lot. They are on track for the best season in the history of baseball. Things like that scare the crap out of me. It's early June. We're not even to the All-Star break. Let's not count chickens and take it one day at a time. Remember our clichés.
If you do a quick google search the news on the Astros is the best I've ever seen. And I was a fan in 2005. They are crushing baseballs. I could still find things to complain about. Defense last night looked thin and while I love Correa (as does all of Houston) I felt like there were some things he let slip. They had a double play situation that didn't work and then a play at first that the pitcher was in time for but Gurriel couldn't get the ball out of his glove.
All of which Lew said ... you're not going to catch everything.
Yes. That's just how baseball go.
I signed G up for fall ball yesterday. He's doing soccer, baseball and cubscouts and we're coaching D's first soccer team. Already I'm ready to hyperventilate.
All that to say it was super fun. Next weekend Lewis and I are off on a weekend away and we have tickets to Wrigley Field. I'm excited. We're seeing Hamilton on Saturday. Excited about that too. But gotta get past the "leaving my kids" nerves and then I'll be really excited.
