Middle Child is 4!!

This was his last night as a three year old.  He will never ever be three again!  He was aware it was his birthday and aware that it was all about him.  But this kid, for all his emotions and moodiness, is pretty laid back with his wants.  What do you want for your birthday?

I want G to be 4.

He kept saying to me that he wanted G to be 3 so he could be 4 with him.  If you asked him what he wanted for his birthday he didn't really have requests for toys or anything.  And when you have an older brother ... I mean we have a ton of toys.  A ton.

But one thing he has not ever had is a birthday party.  I don't do birthday parties every year, as a general rule.  We will always celebrate and do something fun (for David's 2nd birthday we went to Legoland and the Aquarium) but last year we were low key and just did family fun.  We did go to a play place with friends that morning, but it was meet the teacher day as well and we were busy.

All that to say, my big gift to him this year is a party.  We will celebrate him on Wednesday with his friends and cake and fun.  And he is very excited about that.

But Sunday, was his actual birthday, and we were out of town.  But we brought the party with us.

He had cake, balloons, went hunting pokemon at the Alamo ... but his favorite (I truly believe this) is just play time with his brother.  Everything else is kind of second to him.  And he's missed him with school starting.  So I'm glad they got to play so much this weekend.

D is a puzzle I'm still muddling out.  He and I bash heads and he makes me crazy.  He is his mother's son.  We are similar in very many ways and so in that way he makes sense to me but at the same time teaching him adult coping skills for his emotions is a test for me - I still have to learn myself!  He has big disappointments and second prizes don't appease him.  He wants first place.  The crushing blow of not getting first is just all consuming and he can't recover.  This is true in games, at the store if he asks for something, at school if he's misunderstood ... disappointment and sadness are really hard for him.

But he also taught everyone in this house how to be affectionate.  He came into this world a cuddler and he has made G more affectionate and demonstrative.  We always gave hugs and kisses and things ... but for no reason D will give hugs and kisses.

He started prek3 today and that's a big deal.  Curriculum based school.  He's really smart.  (I mean it's prek 3 - harvard next ya'll!) But he is really smart.  He's going to do great.  More on that later.
