My Boy is Three
On this day three years ago I went into the hospital with contractions. It was the end of an easy and uneventful pregnancy ... but one that caused me so much anxiety. After two miscarriages and a rough start where I was told the baby was not viable, I never really recovered. And while I knew and heard and absorbed all of the "baby looks great!" remarks and all the tests that came back negative ... when he came out screaming I sat up in my bed and reached for him asking, "is he okay?"
Oh he screamed. He screamed and screamed and he was purple and I thought he was just so marvelous. With G, my first, I was in awe of what I had done. Amazed. Shocked.
With David I knew everything that was coming and how awesome he was and I was just so grateful he was here. Overwhelmed and overjoyed. Brothers. My sweet, sweet boys.
At the hospital I wanted to leave almost immediately. Wanted to take my prize home and share him with his brother, show him his best friend, his buddy. The one who will have your back for the whole of your life. I wanted to get started.
And I haven't been disappointed. D and G are a set. A pair. D loves him and idolizes him. He would crawl into his skin if he could. He wants to share everything with him.
It's a good thing, but it causes issues too. I took G to get D a birthday present and left D with a babysitter, well he freaked out. He's fine as long as G is there. Without him? Not as fun.
At 3 he is more balanced than 2, less emotional, but he still has outbursts. He tries so very hard to control his emotions, putting his hands over his mouth to stop the cries. Cheeks puffed out big as he holds in his sobs. He listens when punished so much better now. Trips to time out make sense and then the behavior stops. He is doing great.
He is excited so far about school. He goes next Tuesday. We had meet the teacher today. I told the teacher I'm not sure what he'll be like, without his brother there is no telling. And that's true. The boys fight, a lot, but I've never seen D fight with other kids. He cries or whines when things don't go his way but I've never seen him lay someone out like I've seen him go after G.
He is doing everything a three year old should be doing. He knows all his colors and shapes and can count to 10 and sometimes 20. He sings songs and loves - obsessed is a better word - Little Einsteins. He loves the music. He hears it other places and he hums along and says which episode it is. He is more musically inclined than G.
He talks as he's supposed to and talks more when G is gone. But he talks a lot regardless. But when it's just he and I he'll tell me all sorts of things. I'm trying to record more of him talking. Someone once told me to video them all the time when they are learning to talk and between now and like 7, because you will miss their voices when they are grown. I believe that too be true.
He is physical and loving. He loves superheroes and cars and trucks and anything with an engine. We love firemen. In fact ...
D: Silly, stinky poo-poo!
M: D! Nice boys don't use those words!
D: I'm not a nice boy.
M: [uh-oh] Yes you are. You are my nice boy.
D: no I'm not! I'm a fireman!
M: [ah, of course] Well fireman don't use those words! No poo-poo jokes!
He is obsessed with toilet humor. And little wonder as we navigate potty training. But ugh.
He loves his daddy and his brother. His sister he thinks is okay but she doesn't do much. Every so often he'll ask to hold her, and sometimes he'll get an inclination to bury her under her toys. But mostly he gives her a wide berth.

Do not judge their room. They had just woken up and they make such a mess of their books!
Today he have had our balloon celebration and have gone for a cake pop and to our favorite play place. He got a new kitchen and some super hero toys this AM. Lew was hesitant on the kitchen but I said he would love it. D is always "making" me pizza or cake and bringing it to me on pretend items. The first thing he said when he went to the kitchen was, mama! I'll make you a cake!
He also is the most interested in helping mom cook dinner. And with yet another wee one to come up through this age, I think a kitchen is a great addition to our playroom.
He makes my heart happy and I love him. He and I understand each other. He'll be crying and sad, and I'll ask him, why are you crying?
D: I don't know!!
I hear ya kid. Sometimes you just gotta get it out.

Birthdays just make me sentimental. I am so glad he is here and part of our lives. He is super fun to play with and rough house with and sing silly songs with. He loves building with his blocks and then crashing cars into them. He loves bean bags and jumping off the furniture into them. Which I have tried to stop. Truly.
Happy Birthday to my favorite three-year-old. We wish you the happiest, happiest day.
