Sleep Follies
It's been a while since I've written one of these. That's a great thing. The small boy slept in his crib in his room pretty much without incident. The older boy slept in his big boy bed in his room pretty much without incident. All was well in the land of sleep.
Then of course things have to change. Because it's inevitable and necessary and all part of the growing up process.
My second child and my third child will be about 30mo apart. My first and my second are 27mo apart. My husband has a *thing* about buying cribs so it was not really a discussion. G would move before D arrived. So at 26mo, new furniture was ordered (a bunk bed, with the larger bed stored in the attic) and off to the races we went. It went okay, at first. And then he started sleeping on the floor. And then it went better and then it went fine.
So now it's D's turn. We set up the other bed and moved G into the bigger bed and introduced D to his "new" bed, G's old bed.
In the same room.
Dum dum dum!
But Stacy, isn't your house big enough for three kids? Read: don't you have four bedrooms?
Why yes, yes I do. But I also have family that lives all over and we have house guests frequently. I encourage house guests. I love house guests. And I want my family to visit. You can't really have people that like to visit if a visit requires a hotel stay.
So the best way for this to all work out? The boys need to share. All they do is sleep in there. This, surely, can work. Despite the hum of naysayers I've heard.
There are a lot of things I can say about this whole movement of everyone gets their own room, and the whole selfish idea of it, but then I just end up back at the point that most families now are two kid families, so that makes more sense in that situation and it's exhausting and I don't have the energy.
Yesterday was attempt #1 at naptime. FAIL. Epic fail. No nap. So bedtime I was not optimistic.
But he feel right asleep. He slept till 630am which is earlier than days past but not out of the ordinary as to be a fail. So the no nap worked in my favor because he was exhausted. We've got some home reno going on here and no nap again today. And he took longer to fall asleep tonight and he chatted and sang to himself (normally not an issue but now they are sharing) and then fell asleep. G, bless his heart, takes it all in stride and loves the idea of a boys only room, and the nursery being a girls room. It's pleases the order of things in his four year old brain.
So there they are. Sleeping. In the same room. So far so good. Let's hope for long term success.
