The Mess
It does not matter how clean the outfit was when I put it on. Five minutes after I get the kids up it's a mess. There's something on the sleeve right now. There's a peanut butter smudge on the skirt. I'm sure there's egg in my hair. At least that will brush out.
With one kid I could hide it. With two, there's truly no point. Even with one of them a more civilized almost four years old, the youngest one is in that lovely almost 2 phase (somebody pinch me - when did that happen???) and there are smudgey hand prints on every surface of the house, including me.
These are not the only things that have changed with two kids; instead of just one kid and one baby. Dishes. If I don't wash them after every meal they pile up like a smelly mountain of toppling plastic. I can fill up a dishwasher in half a day. It's sort of mind-boggling the amount of mess that is created.
The food. With two kids now eating full sized meals (praise be to God) I'm buying chicken nuggets at least once a week and going through fruit by the truck load. Not seasonal fruit mind, so there were a few months there when Mexico was cold and the strawberries were truly slim pickings.
The laundry. Holy crazy can't-keep-up-batman. It's such a cliche, all of it. But it's a cliche because it's true. I don't know when it happened - okay that's not true. It happened when I started treating D like a person and not like a baby and getting him dressed every morning versus just letting him waddle around in his pajamas all day. I still do this sometimes. Because somedays why does it matter?
We had a busy weekend and I got behind on all of it. I am the cliche. I am the cliche'd mom blogger writing about laundry pile ups and dish overloads and kids eating me out of house and home. I wouldn't even bother - because you all know it's true - but it does amaze me just how true it is!
The boys are wonderful, and because of their messiness not in spite of it. And this isn't a boy girl thing. They are not messier than the little girls I know. In fact G is a fastidious kid. D isn't even really messy either. He's just a kid. He doesn't throw food or put it in his hair or eat dirt or any of that. He hated his smash cake. A lot. But their day to day activities just leave hand prints, literally, every where.
