An Update for Mom

We've had family in town since G's birthday and until last Wednesday.  So a solid two weeks of house guests.  Minus one weekend when we went to Houston.  For Matt's Graduation, he's now a Divine Master.  So I guess we all have to listen to him.

In the above picture mom-in-law that's not related to me but I see her so often that when referring to her family I call them in-laws said of Lewis and I - "the way ya'll are standing holding the kids, you are several feet apart and looks like you hate each other."  It was pretty funny.  I post this picture because it's one of the few I'm actually in, and I like the candidness of it all.  You can also see Stephanie's severed finger, which is a horrifying story of circular saw meets finger meets husband picking up severed finger and a hospital that was unable to reattach.  I wish I were kidding. Blech.  Apparently there are gruesome pictures that half the family has seen and the other half wish never to see.

This was taken at the new park that is pretty neat, but sort of too ... safe? It's wonderful and lovely and we'll go there all the time.  But, well no sharp edges no high heights (though there is a particularly high slide in the older kids part that is SUPER steep.  So ...).  It's perfect for toddlers.  Which is great.  Except ... I dunno part of my brain looks around and says couldn't you just hang a swing from a tree and throw some wildflower seeds near a pond and call it done?  Of course you could.  This is a great park.  G loves it.  Chalupa will too.

He was swinging with great grandma.  He seemed to like it.  But then, G used to love swings and now he won't go near them.  What's up with that?

So what are the kids doing?  Well Chalupa pulled up yesterday for the first time.  He's still too short to reach our coffee table, and he's not really putting one foot in front of the other (when held, obviously) so I think cruising is a bit off.  But he really seems to want to move.  I'd imagine he'll crawl sometime in the next four weeks?  If not he'll cruise.  He is very eager to get involved with whatever it is big brother is doing.  The only reason he pulled up was because he wanted to play at the train table like big brother was doing.

He's sleeping better, but he's started waking up an hour after I put him down for no reason whatsoever.  I honestly think he's testing me to see if I will go in there.  His dad went in on Monday because I was babysitting a friend and Chalupa was up for two hours staring at him with an expression that said, "what the hell are you doing here?"  Then on Friday we had a babysitter and Brian had to go in there and, again, Chalupa looked at him like he had two heads.  When we came home he lunged for me and then turned to Brian with an expression that said, ok, you go home now.  He then cuddled into my neck and gave a big, exhausted sigh.  So last night, over tired from a busy day of birthday parties and over all fun, with little nap time, he was exhausted by 530.  Granted so was G, so everyone was in bed by 615. You think I'm nuts, but Chalupa woke up at 6 and G woke up at 645.  Kids need sleep.  Granted Chalupa woke up at 8, and again at 9, but then slept.  No food between 6 and 6.  So he's learning.  I feel like I'm too easy on him and that's why some of this is happening, but I have no idea.  I'm probably too narcissitic about the whole thing.

I look at it objectively and think, I won't do anything different.  I'm not going to let him scream for hours, or even half hours.  So dwelling on it isn't going to help anything.  Might as well just wake up, rock him, and go about my life.  But I do fret that it's somehow all my fault.  I let him cry for 5/10 minutes or until he gets hysterical (which ever comes first) and I go about my life.  I know when he's 15mos, 18mos, 24mos, and 30mos I'm going to have to go through all this "training" again anyway so might as well just deal with the discipline aspect of it then.   Probably a faulty plan, but, like I said, I'm not going to let him scream for hours.  That benefits no one.

G is a singer.  I find this amusing.  I like singing with him.  But he showed no musical interest prior to this singing and now he wants to sing all the time.  And I've sung to him every night since he was an infant.  But I think music time at school, with Mrs. Wilkins, with her lovely stamps, is what did it.  He gets two stamps, one on each hand, if he stands in his circle and sings along.  And he does.  Every school day.  And first thing he says to me when I pick him up (after he says "my mama's here!") is "mama I got two stamps!" Emphasis on the two.

So G hears all the time, "what an amazing cow lick!" or some variation there in on his hair.  I don't even notice it, his hair that is.  I think it's perfectly normal.  Apparently others don't think so.  I've taken to telling G, when this comes up, that when he was a born the animals loved him so much that a cow gave him a big lick, and made his hair special.  He likes it.  I also tell him Mama loves you to the moon.  How much does mama love you?  And he smiles big and says, To the moooooooooon!  Just now he told Mavvy he loves her to the moon.  I like when things stick in his brain.

We went to the Flight Museum on Friday and had a great day of kid fun.  I did not do anything productive.  No laundry.  No dishes.  No cleaning no straightening no email no phone calls no bills paid nothing.  I can't do that very often, as you can imagine.  I didn't even make lunch.  We bought drive through on the way home to nap.  He had a great day of airplanes and then a birthday party at a kid gym.  Very much fun.  Pictures are cute, and I'll show some if I remember when I upload them.

Next weekend is memorial day and I'll have pictures of the new niece and her family.  Shortly there after Chalupa is 9mos old.  He will officially have spent more time out of my tummy than in.  I feel like this is a big turning point for babies, and sort of the end of their infancy.  *tear*  The beginning of their march to toddlerhood.  I need to start going through the pictures for his baby book.  I have as many pictures of him as I do G, trust me, I do.  But I have fewer candid's of him on the "big" camera and more on my phone.  I don't know what that's going to do to my photobook.  Hopefully not much.  I need to get the camera out today or tomorrow.

Disney has a commercial for banana helado.  It's milk free.  I think it's in my future.  I could do chocolate banana ice cream.
