Faces
When I talk to people there seems to be differing opinions on whether or not my sons look like each other. Some people say they look nothing alike. A woman yesterday told me it was uncanny how similar they look.
As the mother, I can say that I see glimpses of the baby I had two years ago. But then I look and see eyes that are a completely different shape, a hairline that has some similar qualities but is really quite different.
Even their smiles, these early reflexive ones, are very, very different. G was always hello! I'm here! Chalupa seems much more reserved. Though if he gets angry enough, he does make his presence known.
Little things are different. Big things are different. G fought sleep with the passion of fiery suns. Chalupa asks only that you feed him, swaddle him, and hold him a bit. And then he will drift peacefully off.
I will not recount the sleep battles I had with G. Thinking of them makes me tired. He would scream and scream and scream. And then finally give up and fall asleep for two hours, and then wake up again.
G was never a bad baby, he was a very good and happy baby. Always smiling. But Lordy the child did not want to miss anything. He was always aware and alert. Chalupa is much more at peace with his existence, as long as you are holding him. Not to say G didn't like being held, he did. He just did not like going to sleep. Chalupa, thus far, does not seem to mind it.
A bit of this is just my better understanding of babies. G made me an expert on over tiredness and the flailing and the noises. It also helps that Chalupa is just growing like the biggest weed. If he refuses to eat and just wants to go to bed, I let him. Clearly he's getting enough so clearly it's okay. With G I did not have that level of certainty.
But to these pictures ... they both look like their father. They both have their dad's forehead, their father's nose. Their eyes are similar but may be different, I don't know. I've given up thinking Chalupa's eyes will stay blue. They are turning the tell tale purple of eyes that will eventually be brown. They both seem to have a cowlick, though I can't see exactly where Chalupa's will be. G had more hair.
And their birth dates in relation to their due dates messes me up. I do think that developmentally G was further ahead, but when I look it all up (because yes I have pictures from every day and I can do this, and I have a baby book that has all his weights and measures) Chalupa is just a week or so behind, and the birth date a week early may be the cause of that. My mom certainly thinks so.
People tell you to take pictures, just take so many pictures. And I did and I do. Every day. I will never regret it. But people make fun of me.
They are just jealous.
