Pre-School

I wish I had some pithy, lovely "first day of school" type heading for this post.  But alas, I do not.  These pictures were taken BD (before D) so before the first day of school really.  Because I figured that juggling everything that first morning wasn't going to allow for really great photography (I was right).

This is G the morning of his first day of school.  He did not want to put on his backpack, or hold it, or put on his shoes, or his shirt, or do much of anything.  It never fails that when you have to get out of the house at a certain time, the kiddos aren't going to cooperate.  (FYI, the shoe shopping for the shoes pictured below was not pleasant.  It wasn't the absolute worst thing ever, but it was not awesome.  His "car shoes" were size 5.  According to the measuring thingies, he should be in a 7.  I call BS but whatever.  I settled with a 6.5 because I feel shoes that are too big create more spills and falls.  The new shoes have been dubbed "good kicking shoes" as I was hoping this would help.  It didn't immediately, but it went okay later.)

At meet the teacher last Friday he loved pre-school.  There are lots of toys and the room is great and has a kid sized table (duh) and a kitchen and lots of cars and airplanes and a play park and all things that my little boy loves.  He left very excited to go back, and kept talking about pre-school day.

On the day of pre-school, it was a slightly different story.  When we walked up to the door, there was a little girl inside the class room literally running away from the aides screaming the place down.  She was scaring the other children, and three little girls were cowering by the door begging to get out.  G saw this and, understandably, was like, uh-uh, no way mom.  He would have been okay if he could have walked in, but because the kids were so frightened and hanging on the gate like caged monkeys, it wasn't possible.  I had to hand him over, and he immediately started crying.

I did what I was told, waved goodbye and smiled brightly and turned away.

I held myself together because crying mama's upset small people and I didn't want to upset any other kiddos.  But it was not easy for me.  I ended up emailing the director and asking her to check on G when she had a moment, just to make sure he had settled in.  Of course he had, and was playing.

When I picked him up he was happy and babbling and missing his shoes! His friend Bryson had them on.  And he even slept (supposedly) for half an hour.  Which I think is a good sign he may end up napping at school eventually.  He talked a bit about pre-school and seemed excited when I asked if he would go back.  So I'm confident that tomorrow will be better and Tuesday will be even better than that and so on and so forth.

I'm already seeing new words in his vocabulary.  Either by coincidence or from school.  He asked me to lay down his nap mat for him at about 5PM (he was tired) and he now says "why is baby brother crying?"  This is probably from the other changes this week and not from school.  But seriously he's like a rocket scientist in my eyes now ... mostly because I'm confronted daily with his origins.  I mean seriously look how far they come?

Yay G! Glad the first day ended up well even if it was a tiny bit tough on the mama.
