Nap #6 and Swim Lessons

It really should be nap #5 because he completely skipped Saturday's nap, though he did hang out in the bed for over an hour ratting around.

I added a pillow to his bed today.  Last night he was so restless and trying to lay his head on his blankets and putting things under his blankets that I thought maybe he would use a pillow.  He laid on it for about 5 minutes but then he proceeded with his sleep time ritual of move everything around and circle the bed several times (very dog like) and then collapse in a heap.

He has not tried to get out of his bed for several days / attempts.  This makes me a bit easier though I'm still not sleeping well, and waking up almost hourly to check the monitor.  How my brain does this, I have no idea.  I think it's partly pregnancy insomnia and newborn prep.

There will be pictures of the new house coming soon.  I'm almost ready to photograph G's room and the guest bedroom.  Need to hang photos / art in both.  G's room is a bit problematic as I want to incorporate his love (obsession) with fire trucks and all things TRUCKS but I can't really find anything appropriate to hang in his room.  I really like the look of this but I don't have $200 lying around.  I don't have the talent to recreate something.  It's frustrating.  I'm to the point where I'm going to take one of the pictures I've taken with G and fire trucks and blow it up poster size.  That might be more meaningful anyway.  Certainly it'd be cheaper.

So I just wanted to say that the big boy bed thing is going really well, though I still don't get the impression he's incredibly excited about it.  I've been able to remove toys from the bed, which means he's more comfortable.

Now for swim lessons.  Lewis went with me today, I wanted him to see what the instructor does so that we can try to mimic it (in part) while we swim so that it's not all for naught.  G's doing really well with the skills.  He still cries and hates it and gets very nervous before it's his turn.  But he's learning!  When we go swimming everyone comments on how well he does in the water and asks me how old he is and says "wow, he swims really good for being 2!"

I'm not sure if she'll graduate him from this class to the group class or not.  This is our 4th week so maybe after the full six weeks?  I was sort of hoping that he would relax about the whole process, but it's a stressful enviornment.  There is another woman giving the same private lessons in the pool with them, and today there was an older girl (she seemed really tall, I'm so bad with ages, I'd have guessed 3, almost 4?) who just screamed the entire time and wouldn't participate.  She made G very, very nervous and he started crying early.  But he does all the skills she asks him to, and he's very comfortable in the water and can get to the side / stairs or float on his back on his own, which is all I wanted from the process.  I never leave him, obviously, but I think that overall the swim lessons were a very good thing, even if they are a bit controversial.

I asked Lewis if he could understand why many parents stop taking their kids and he said yes.  It's not pleasant for the kids.  And I think there is something to the idea that swim lessons can be fun so why not do that?  And 2 is very young to be working on actual skill building.  But that's the route we went.  And I'm pleased with the results.  G shows little to no fear of the water, and does not get nervous (when swimming with us) like I see other kids do.  He also holds his breath like a champ and doesn't "drink the water" (they let water in, come up, gag?) as often as I see other kids.  Anyway.  I can try to justify my mean mommy swim lessons all day long.

The main reason we did swim lessons this year was because I wanted a class that would be beneficial, would not involve me, and would help him prepare to be instructed by other adults (pre-school).  Open house is next Monday.  School doesn't start until September 11th.  Such a busy summer for my little man.  Growing up an awful lot, awful fast; swim lessons, big boy bed, preschool, big brother ... lots of changes for him.  I know he's up to it.  He's very competent.
