If it were Bush's fault ...

He wouldn't have used Executive Priviledge.  But he did.  I'm not sure why he did.  Was it to cover up what the White House knew when?  Or was it to stand by his man, and offer up White House protection?  We may never know now; that's the nature of executive priviledge.

But Jay Carney today blaming it on the Bush administration, and Nancy Pelosi saying it's because the Republicans are trying to start voter suppression and voter fraud in an election year without the ever vigiliante AG ... is just the biggest bunch of garbage I've ever heard.

Do you know about Fast and Furious?  Do you know what it was?  There was a similar program under the Bush administration, called Operation Wide Receiver.  There were key differences; one, the original program was run in conjunction with the Mexican government, two the guns in question were more tightly monitored and (supposedly) they didn't lose track of them (as is what happened in F&F), and three, they were actually catching Mexican criminals.  And none of those weapons were later found to be used in a shoot out at the border that left agent Brian Terry dead.

Fast and Furious was the illegal walking of guns into Mexican hands.  All those deaths and the violence and the drug wars?  Much of that is being fought with guns that the ATF (under the administrations orders) gave to the cartels.

When Brian Terry was killed, ATF whistle blowers came forward and said hey this program isn't working and it's dangerous.  And Congress decided to investigate.  They asked the AG for pertinent information and emails.  He provided some, lied about others, and now has asked the WH for EP to apply.

This has been going on for months.  I'm not familiar with all the details, not really, but I did know the cruxt of the story.  We gave guns to bad guys and the bad guys shot a good guy and now the other "good guys" are disavowing.  Not good.

But to blame this on anything other than a bad program gone very, very bad is ridiculous.  And obviously something was going on otherwise the President wouldn't have used EP.  Right?  I mean if there was nothing to hide, why hide it?

He's not the first President to use EP and he won't be the last.  He may get away with it this time, he may not.  I don't know what he knew.  He says he found out about F&F on the television.  I don't really think the White House had a lot to do with it ... maybe they did.  If you listen to some talking heads out there he did ... but he can't have his fingers in all the pots.

But this wasn't Bush's fault.  And this is a real program, and a real death, and a real cover-up, not a made up conspiracy to suppress voters.  If it wasn't ... the President wouldn't have had to use EP at all.

I don't think Executive Privilege can be used to cover up illegal activity.
