Handful of Stories...
... from this three week trip.
I turned G's carseat around shortly after his birthday. Not because he's too big to ride rearfacing (he's not) but because I thought it'd make trips easier or at least more fun for him, as he could actually see. And the AAP recommendation is 2 years so I made that milestone even though he'd be safer if he rode the other way.
Anyway.
So he calls out every automobile he sees. "big truck!" "fire truck!" "train!" "car!" "trash truck!" "dump truck!" He loves things that go. All the way to Pittsburg he called those out.
On the way to Albuquerque from Pittsburg he saw an RV, that he called a bus. I corrected him and told him it was an RV. "Bus!" "RV!" "Bus!" Bus said at louder and louder decibels to get his point across. Mom took up the fight at one point (it went on for many minutes - there's video) and it becamse a game. Now if at any time you say RV, he will say bus in return. It tickles his funny bone.
At the base here he hears airplanes and runs for the door to see them. He's always asking "Waz that?" or "Did you see it?" Most of the time he answers his own question. He just like that he knows the answer.
When we first got here, he could only say the first syllable of Rusty, so Rus. Abby, who bless her soul is in doggy heaven with Jack now, he called Ah-ey. He was told to stay away from her in case she had this and so he said "Ah-ey sick," all the time. For those interested, Abby was in renal failure and then this morning had a 90 second seizure. She remained immobile (except for breathing) for about 5 minutes when she did jump to a standing position. We never saw her walk. We were waiting for a signal that it was "time." We took the seizure as that sign. She did not ever seem to be in pain, per say, but she was not eating or drinking and was just ... melancholy.
Now, after about two weeks here, G is doing so much better at second syllables. He says Rus-ty, very deliberately, and calls for him throughout the house. Today he climbed up onto my parents bed with Rusty's ball and Rusty jumped up there with him (hilarity to G) and then G threw the ball and Rusty jumped off the bed to retrieve it. This was easily twenty minutes of entertainment. There is video, and pictures. It was terribly cute.
Not so terribly cute ... we went to the Aquarium and Botanical Gardens today. At the gardens they have a model train set up that has thomas the train on it and two buttons for kiddos to push to make him go. There was no one there so he got to play for several minutes by himself. But then others came for a turn and it was time to go. He pitched a fit. He was mad at me ("NO!" every time I looked at him) for about thirty minutes. It was pretty funny, except that it wasn't when I was dragging him screaming from the gardens. It's a good thing he's light. If he was much heavier it'd have been a battle.
Somewhere along the way he has picked up the term $6 dollars. Everytime he holds a credit card, check book or piece of paper he says "six dollars." Explain this to me? For one, I'm ashamed to admit he's probably seen me use cash oh, maybe never. But where did he get the six part? What's it about? It's pretty funny. I'll try to get it on camera.
He also counts now. Which is pretty cool. He counts trucks, mostly. Up to four yesterday, today it was up to five. But in Pittsburg we were stacking creamer at a restaurant and he counted to six.
Grandma and Granddad have three little trains for a mini Thomas the Train set that he got for Christmas (but stays at Grandma's). He loves them. He takes them to bed. Tonight he refused to read books or even think about the bed time routine without them. I had to go get them (they were in the car from the trip to the zoo). I'm afraid they may have to make the trip home with us.
We head back to Texas soon. It's been a long trip, and we're still going to be displaced. But then I'll be setting up a new house. And it'll all be okay.
