How He Fared
We left G at the airport with his Grandmother. We went to pick her up, than drove ourselves to the other airport, programmed the GPS so she could get to our house, and left. I cried. G didn't. He went home to his house and his goody basket and was distracted well enough, I think.
That day I was within cell service for most of the afternoon. When we got to Miami I called home to see if he was still balling (as I was certain he missed me). He wasn't. He didn't. Well that's good, I thought.
We got to the Bahamas and I quickly inspected the internet situation. I had to have it. I couldn't use my phone and I wasn't going to use Lewis's work phone for such graituitous personal use (especially since literally 2 hours ago G had been fine). So I had to have the internet. I don't think I got in touch with her. I emailed her from the ipad because I couldn't get the internet working on the computer yet (Lew fixed it all for me, on both phones, ipad and laptop - yes, we're ridiculous). I txt'd her from Lewis's phone (who has an international plan) and she responded that he was perfectly fine, eating his dinner, watching his shows, and he seemed as if everything was normal normal. Go have fun she told me.
The next day was very much the same. No tears, no issues when it was Gma picking him up in the morning and not mama. She did have food issues. Grady is picky, all of you regulars know this. But he's picky about his picky. If it's not presented in the same way, he's likely not to eat it. So ... don't put ketchup on the plate with his chicken. Even if they aren't touching, he won't eat the chicken. Mom learned this. She presented his breakfast different some how, and he wouldn't eat it. Lunch was the same. I wasn't worried. Grady will sometimes be stubborn for two meals, but he's not ridiculous. I knew he would eat by the third. So our first full day gone she said she couldn't get him to eat breakfast or lunch but he did eat three chicken nuggets at dinner. And that's pretty typical of him. Once we get through the EE business, I'm fairly confident I can out stubborn him and reason with him into trying other things. But that's another post for another day.
The point is, the child was fine. Better than fine. So much so that I asked my mom on the 2nd or 3rd day, "is he even asking for us? At all? Be honest." And she said, "No. This is harder for you than him."
However, by the 4th or 5th day we had done facetime (because it's on wifi and free so that's how we were communicating) and after we'd done once or twice G would bring Gma her phone and say "picture mama?" and ask for facetime, as it were. So he did now we were gone, even if he didn't ask for us.
Mom said he asked for Daddy more than me. Every time he saw Lewis's car he would get said and ask for Daddy. This doesn't surprise me. Lewis makes a big show every morning leaving for work, honking the horn, flashing the lights, revving the engine. G loves it. Goes nuts.
And by the 5th night he was asking to see our pictures before bed. So he did miss us. And his clingyness when I got back and today are more proof of that. They met us at baggage claim when we landed and Lewis and I rushed off the plane to go see him, and walked briskly down the escalator to see him ... I expected him to run at us arms extended. But he just held Gma's hand and tried to tell me something about the escalator and his finger (it pinched him, it hurt, he cried).
So a good trip, and maybe tomorrow I'll post more about the actual trip and the fun that was had. But I'm so tired and stressed from having to move in 12 days that it's just not going to happen tonight. It's good to know that he may cry when I leave for dinner out, but when it comes down to it, he's fine. I was worried his separation anxiety would just ruin the whole trip for mom and him. But it seems he's just dramatic about me leaving. Noted, small person, noted.
