Things that are changing
We're three days away from his 22nd month on this green earth but there are things that I must write down.
This morning when he woke up --
Side note: The routine in the morning has become a beat down of sorts. He doesn't want his diaper changed. His doesn't want to put on his clothes. He wants to run around for endless minutes in his footie pajamas. I've compromised and changed him on the floor of his room, whilst he peruses toys/books/items long missed in the 12 hours he dozed. But he still fights and kicks me. And I have to change his diaper. It's been 12 hours. And in the cheap diapers we had a week of the worst, most horrible, cry inducing diaper rash ever and I won't risk it again. It was horrible. He was in so much pain. End side note.
-- and I put him in his pants and he went to the pile of clothes in the corner (perfect momma I am not) and found his Buzz T-shirt (a gift from gma) and started to carry it around like a blanket. And I said, Do you want to wear Buzz? And I kid you not, the child looked at the shirt in his hands and said, clear as a 2 year old can, I can wear Buzz?? His brain just did not think this was possible. So he's been happily sporting Buzz on his shirt all day. It's too big (2T) and it shows but whatever. He likes it.
But he's really putting words together. Not all the time. There's still a lot of babbling in which I try to look like I understand and while changing his diaper today he did such babbling and I nodded along with him and made understanding oh and aw sounds and he just laughed. Like he knew he was talking gibberish and I couldn't understand. But he says where's fire truck and he's using mama now, and not just when I'm gone (the only time he would before). He'll come into a room saying "mama, mama, mama!" Like something amazing has happened. When in reality all he wants is more fruit snacks.
Another word he can say clearly. Fruit snacks. I was doing the I'm a good mama look at me buying organic fruit snacks but he inhales them and I can't do it. So I bought the jumbo box of off brand and he's fine. No developing tumors as far as I can see.
But, back to the point, he's putting words together and speaking in phrases (sometimes) and is becoming quite rapidly, two years old.
Which, is a burden and a joy.
Oh the two year old mindset of instant gratification and oh my gosh if we don't do this right now the world is going to end and how can you not see how vital this is to my life I think I'll have a melt down RIGHT HERE IN THE GROCERY STORE!
For instances, today outside of Kohl's he wanted to watch the truck. The eighteen-wheeler that was sitting, parked, in the parking lot. So we sat for a minute or so. But um, mama's got a life and we can't stay all day. Well we walked off, and he freaked out. I had to do the time out, calm down, sit here please outside of the store and that still didn't keep him from freaking out inside the store when I didn't want to let him run around like a crazy insane asylum patient who just got out on furlow.
And he sees things he understands (pants) and wants to touch them all. And he understands toys, and fire trucks, and trucks in general and they are every where. Literally store managers put land mines all over stores that are meant to trip you up. End caps in grocery stores have little toy trucks. He sees all of this. He wants to touch them. He wants to understand them all and memorize all of their working parts. He wants to run them on the floor and make truck noises.
That's hard to do while I need to be picking up milk.
Now normally, it's not so bad because he's in the cart. And I can include him in the grocery shopping (put this in the cart) but at Kohl's today (and other stupid times when I lose my sanity and decide to let him walk) there is no good cart and he either had to be held (which he hates) or he had to walk holding my hand (which he tolerates, if I go where he wants).
He really is a walking bundle of desires and need to explore and it's hard to reign that in to get things done and explain why mama, who usually lets him roam free, is upset. The other day we had an altercation and a few minutes later, after it passed, he crept toward the bedroom door and I realized he thought I was upset because he had tried to go in our bedroom. Nope. Not at all.
So it's pointless to get mad / upset at a sentient being who is only partially functional. I have always understood the terrible twos. They are frustrated creatures who want, want, want but they can't fully communicate those wants and they have no concept of time and waiting. Patience is a virtue that is rough to teach and hard to learn.
So ... I would like to welcome us all to the sunrise of his two-ness. I feel the anecdotes from this stage (and there future black mail value) will get me through this stage with a certain level of humor.
