If President Bush had been seen singing "Sweet Home" anything with gas prices closing in on $4 a gallon, in February, with Memorial Day a few months off and the threat of $5 gas very real, the media would have bashed him for being out of touch and being too relaxed while the country suffers.
But oh no, not this media. Still so deep in his pockets, they jovially comment that he should go on the road, and that he had great courage to sing in front of so many people. Not one remark about how he's so flippant while the rest of the country wonders what's going to happen to their bank accounts as the summer driving season approachs. I'm sure he'll still take his summer vacation to Martha's Vineyard or wherever he and the Misses decide to go. The rest of us, will put off vacations and go to the movies, because we can't afford to run the a/c and we can't afford to drive to Disney World. And forget flying.
I'm over this entire thing. He made ridiculous comments about drilling for oil today and clearly has no intention of trying to offer relief at the pump. I assure you, after the campaign starts in earnest, and the country is reeling from another record gas season, he will want to do something. Because gas and energy costs hit everyone where it hurts. And most people can't put $80 in their car once a week and not feel the pain at the grocery store or else where.
And I beg to differ with his premise that we can't drill our way to lower gas prices. If we even looked like we were going to hurt OPEC's bottom line, they wouldn't halt production like they do and gauge us every. single. summer. It would have to be competitive, because we would threaten them with competition.
And hey if I'm wrong, than the price stays high and we're still all screwed, but at least we're doing something and not lining the pockets of Middle Eastern dictators who hate us anyway.
But something that was said at last nights nauseau inducing debate last night did resonate with me. And it was Rick Santorum (of all people) who brought it up. We do have moral bankruptcy in this country, and that is in large part our problem. Kids making $15k a year buying smartphones and data plans and crying to the fed that they can't afford health care. Umm ... yeah you could if you spent that $100+ a month on healthcare premiums and not things you don't. really. need.
Or even, if you don't want healthcare, save that $100 a month and use that to pay out of pocket at the doctors office. They do accept cash you know.
Alright rant over. I have to feed the kid.
