Toddler Backpack
I have wanted to get / make G a backpack for awhile now. It's like a right of passage or something. A place for a child to store his or her things and carry them around. G is a long way from going to school (a battle his dad and I are discussing at the moment), but eh the early bird and all that.
This was made using this pattern which I borrowed from a friend. It was fairly easy, the hardest part was finding appropriate fabrics really, and the curve at the bottom of the backpack and sewing the piping on. It actually required very little pining! BONUS.
I used apparel fabric for the outer pieces and bottom weight twill for the straps and base (as suggested in the pattern). The outer pieces really could stand to be interfaced, but for my first attempt at something so complicated I decided to stick to the pattern, which did not call for it. Next time I will use interfacing and line the outer pieces before I put everything together, which will mean everything will need to be a 1/4" bigger to allow for putting that together and top stitching.
G takes it off by pulling the whole thing over his head (ala removing a shirt) and he can't quite figure out how to get it back on (pictured bottom right). He was not keen on it when I first put it on, but after we collected some toys and put them inside (and had breakfast) he was much more amenable. This would make a great 1st or 2nd birthday gift, and all in, with fabric on sale and coupons could be done for around $20.
