Kansas

So last Monday I woke up and decided our week was pretty open (and I had two books on tape to listen to) why not drive to Kansas?

So a few phone calls later I was on the road.
G does great in the car. He slept for maybe thirty minutes and the rest of the time he was up playing with toys I would hand him or eating lunch or just looking out the window as big rigs rolled by. I could not ask for a better road trip buddy. Well, except maybe a better conversationalist. But that will come in time.

We mostly hung out and visited, spending quality time with my grandmother, aunt and cousins.  There was a trip to the park and chasing ducks, family dinners and a playground party.

Having traveled with G pretty much every six weeks for all of his 17 months on this earth, I can say that as he gets older it just gets a little bit easier every time.  Pretty much I can handle anything during the day - bad moods, temper tantrums, food throwing, etc. - as long as he's sleeping at night.  That's the only part of traveling that scares me.  I even told Lew before I left - if he doesn't sleep tonight, I may come home tomorrow.  Because it's that big of a deal.

But G is a trooper.  And a good sleeper (pat on the back to his parents).  And he did great.  He actually did me really proud.  He minded well, and was remarkably at ease.  I don't know if he remembers being in Kansas at all (he's been a few times) or if he's just matured a bit.  Maybe both?  No one knows but G.

But he gave high fives, and played with new toys, and put away toys, and threw away his trash and even was able to point to his ears and nose when asked.  He was also able to point out his grandmother when asked - which amazed me.  But a woman at my Grandmother's unit asked him "where's your grandma?" and he pointed her out right away.

He knew he was being watched by the ladies of the group and he put on a great show, pulling out all his best tricks.  It was great, and I think they were well pleased.

He loved playing at the park and the ducks and for the first time in a new place, he wasn't a spider monkey around my neck and he took off running and exploring, more like he is at home.

At the playground party he loved all the blocks and music and people and playground equipment and slides.  There are more pictures of this and I'll try to upload everything.  Obviously I took a ton.

We also went and saw Big Brutus.  G loves trucks and cars and anything that moves and makes engine sounds.  His happiest times (other than chasing ducks) was being outside Grandmother's apartment and watching all the cars and trucks drive by.  So Wednesday I thought we should take him to see a really big truck.

Look how tiny he is next to it!

So we did.  There's a bunch of pictures.
