What happens to all those cards?

Do you ever wonder what happens to all the stationary you send into the world?  Do you wonder what people do with Christmas cards, Valentine's and any and all coorespondence you send throughout the year?
I do.  Sometimes I know what happens.  Sometimes G's Great Grandmother's send letters back, thanking me for recent pictures and for keeping them in the loop.  I think I was born into the wrong generation.

I have four boxes like this.  Filled to the gills with wedding invitations, baby announcements, party invites, wedding save the dates ...  letters from pen pals in college and high school.  Some people I no longer talk to, but I still have their letters.  I just can't bring myself to throw them away ... it's a tangible piece of someone's time.  I even keep thank you cards!

I have Christmas cards for every year that Lewis and I have been together.  I save them all.  And I like looking back (especially at my sis-in-laws) and see the families grow.  Just 3 kids in this picture ... next year their will be 4!  I think it's very cool.

I've saved every card and paper my grandmother has sent me.  Some of them have gotten messed up (a news paper clipping is floating around in this box and I'm going to have to go through it all to find the letter it goes to).  And I'm sure I've lost some letters or cards.

My favorite cards?  The ones my family sent me when I was baptised.  Letters that Lewis sent me when we were living in different places.  And I love the baby announcements and party invites.

An entire generation, coming into the world before our very eyes.  And people spend so much time and money on these.  Taking the perfect picture, maybe hiring a photographer, finding the perfect layout and stationary to tell every body their baby has been born!

Of these, my favorites are the ones of my sister-in-laws' kids.  I thought I went further back ... but I have Sierra's and Hannah's (going to be 7 and 5 this year?!?! how is that possible?) and James' and 4 of the Indiana kids.  And these are just so beautiful, the layouts are so pretty.

Did you invite me to your wedding?  I have the invitation, the placecard from the table, the program, and if there was one, the menu.  Yes.  I have it all.  And if it was prior to 2008, I have it in a scrapbook with a picture of you and your spouse at your wedding.  I keep it all.  It's funny, sometimes I put the invite away too early - like, before I've RSVP'd - and then I don't send the RSVP and we are THAT couple.  But if I go through my box ... it's still there, complete with the poor postage that I've squandered.  Bad me.

I have all the cards from our wedding, from the baby showers, the folks that visited after he was born.  I'm sure there are some I've missed or gotten misplaced or that got trashed.  I'm not perfect or anything.  But I've saved quite a bit.  And the question becomes ... what do I do with it all?

I want to do something with all of this (what?), but for now they are stowed away in a box.  Of the 12 babies that we are welcoming into the world this year (one of them my own neice or nephew), 9 are here.  Three more, and one in two weeks!
