HP Weekend aka Settlers Weekend
Harry Potter weekend is now over. The last guest has left. G and I are alone with our coffee (and milk). The house is quiet. Every time we have someone stay with us the silence after they leave is deafening. It always makes me think I need to fill this house with people!
So this weekend was great. Except G and I got sick. I really think this was partly stress induced, because that's what I do. I get stressed and I lose my voice. But G was too sick to go to his friends house while we watched the movie, so we had to scramble to find another childcare option at the last minute. But we made it work and we all got to see the movie together.
Then Lewis went and bought Settlers of Cataan. Which is a great game. Which we played a gazillion times. It's a strategy game (think Risk with cards and no battles) but you can't play with just two people so now I'm stuck. Lewis and I were trying to think of which of are friends would like it ... how did I end up friends with so many non-game players?!?
G had been sick with me all week but yesterday he had a low fever, so I took him to the doc. No ear infection or anything serious - but when he got on the scale he had not gained any weight. In fact, he weighed (fully clothed and diapered) the exact same as he weighed at his 12 month appointment (two months ago). So if anything he'd lost weight. Our appointment became less about his cough and more about his weight.
The doctor said he'd rather have a small child than an obese one (but I bet to the mom's of bigger kid he says the opposite). The thing that he said that scared me (aside from when the nurse checked his oxygen levels - all fine) was that if he wasn't getting taller it could be a nutritional issue. Ahhh! I do try really hard to get him his food groups. Harder than I try for myself. Anyway that's only a worry if he's not growing - and since this was a sick visit and not a well child we hadn't checked his height yet. So the doc measured his length (at which time I also pointed out that I think there were inconsistencies with the nurses measuring too). And he'd grown an inch and a quarter (he's 30.25 in tall!).
So he's not deprived nutrients (whew! I'm pretty sure docs have CPS on speed dial) he's just a skinny kid. I say that all the time. I defend it all the time - his parents were skinny, he'll be skinny. We're not giants, why would he be huge? I say it so much it hurts my ears. But none of those facts change the issue of his weight being low, and our society views healthy babies by how chunky they are. It makes sense - you don't have to worry about big babies getting enough to eat - you know they are eating well. Skinny kids you don't know if you're giving them enough. And if G fusses at me and acts hungry, whether or not he ate 10 minutes before or 4 hours before, I feed him. And if he doesn't eat his vegetables, if he eats the crackers I give him more crackers. Thankfully if he's hungry enough (and I give him veggies or fruits first) he'll usually eat the less desireable items. And if he mutiny's on texture foods all together, he's been known to eat a veggie smoothy (read: puree's).
All in - it was a good weekend. I'll be glad when G and I are healthy again. This is the cold that won't die. I'm very sad that this was the last HP weekend ever, but all good things must come to an end. I need to see the movie again. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I don't think the Deathly Hallows will ever be my favorite of the series (movies - I love the 7th book). It's just too dark. And I know the books took a serious and dark turn somewhere around 3-4 but I feel like the movies took an even darker turn. For time sakes they had to cut out non-plot items, but I think those everyday items are what made the books so great. If they had depressed everyone I don't think they would have been so popular.
Alright that's enough. But now who am I going to play Settlers with? Sigh.

And Grady is an awesome little guy with an awesome mom--that's half the battle won right there.
Leyton was a skinny kid too... Dr. always said he was shaped like me. Poor Leyton :-) Hope you guys getting to feeling better!
Anon - I know we totally did. I think you may have jinxed me. :) Of course it's back now, a week after everyone left! I try not to fret about his weight but you know ... new momma stupidness.
