Libya
I am so nervous about the powder keg that is this part of the world. So many uprisings, so many unsatisfied peoples. This is the sort of thing you can expect when so many are oppressed, but the unrest gives me the willies.
I support our involvement - for this reason: if we truly believe that freedom is the right of all peoples, and if we truly believe that all people are equal, than we have a duty to protect those that are threatened by dictators. Now if the citizens of Libya aren't protesting, and aren't trying to break free, we leave them be. But they are trying to break out from under a dictator, and that dictator was dropping bombs on his own people. We should not just sit back and say, "not our country, not our problem." Not if we truly believe that all people are equal and freedom is a universal right of all people.
Now that being said, a third war? Really?
And whoa - UN says we're going to start bombing Libya? After, what a week? Maybe one resolution? No security team sent in to assess the threat level? To try and use diplomacy and see if Gadafi can be reasoned with? All they want is a no fly zone, lets just do that says the UN. He will have to obey the no fly zone, or else. When he didn't honor the no fly zone request, they sent in troops and started air raids on Gadaffi targets.
What's the problem here? Iraq. 12 years of a no fly zone. 12 years of broken UN resolutions. 12 years of US airmen being shot down patrolling the no fly zone. A US media that didn't think we were at war. Didn't even register Iraq on the nightly radar. And the UN didn't want to do anything. And during that time, Saddam Hussein was systematically killing his own people. Burying them in mass graves. And threatening the world with weapons of mass destruction (at least talking about it - even if he didn't actually have any).
So why the hypocrisy?
Kofi Annan, oil for food, and MONEY MONEY MONEY. The UN was making a fortune off of oil out of Iraq. A PERSONAL fortune for those working for that corrupt institution.
I can not believe the hypocrisy and double talk of what I'm seeing on the news. It's unbelievable.
President Obama doesn't say boo to the American people or CONGRESS before sending pilots in to bomb Libya, and the initial silence is deafening. They are starting to protest now.
Or the meme that a no fly zone is a great undertaking and an act of war (both are true) but the no fly zone was downgraded in the early 2000s as just a "thing" not a war. No risk. No airman deployed away from their families.
MAKES ME CRAZY.
Three wars. All of them in the middle east. Is it really that far of a leap to think that this part of the world is the spark that's going to lead to a world war?
Pray for our troops. Our overworked, underpaid, underappreciated troops. God bless them all.
