Dedicated

Today was Grady's dedication at church. It really should be called Our Dedication to Grady at church. It's really where we say, in front of everyone, that we dedicate our life to raising a good, Christian kid. In so much as we can.

You know that scene in Lion King, where the monkey takes the lion cub and holds him out in front of all the animals? That's sort of like what this is. We stand in front of the church, show them all our son, and we promise that we know what a big responsibility we have, and that we will do our best to be good examples and teach him about Christ and doing good. And the congregation (and our family) acknowledge that this is a big responsibility for them too, and they promise to be supportive and prayerful.

It's not like a Baptism, or a Christening, or anything like that. It's not a big deal. It's just a nice thing to do. So it's not really something that you sort of announce or do invitations or even think about out of town guests. It's a nice thing, it's an important thing, but it's not ... huge. At least in our faith.

Now all that having been said, it's still a family event. And we don't have local family here. And things like this just make me feel more isolated. I did mention the dedication yesterday, in passing to our friends (who do not attend our church) and I think because she knows, she said they should go. I didn't even invite them. I sort of feel bad about that now. And they came, and they took pictures for us. Which is nice. We are lucky to have friends that want to be involved in events when our family can not be. So now, via proxy, you guys get to see it all too.
