Snowmageddon, Snowtorious, Snow ... WHATEVER

So there was a winter storm that hit the entire midwest, from Chicago to Dallas, on Monday and Tuesday.  It was wicked.  For the parts north of Dallas.

Dallas had 5 hours of weather.  High winds, thunder, icy rain.  That icy rain caked the roads in 1-2 inches of solid sheets of ice.  It's yuck and awful.

But let me stress.  That was MONDAY night.  It is now FRIDAY.  The temperature has not gotten above freezing in that time, and I've realized that Dallas's entire severe weather plan consists of "wait for the stuff to melt."

Schools and governments have been closed since Tuesday.  The roads are not plowed or iced and have no dirt on them.  It is completely unsafe.  And I'm ranting because I think this is a completely bogus plan.  Wait for it to melt.

What would these governments do if the grocery stores closed, and "waited for it to melt?"  Would they find some trucks and put some salt in the back of them and make something happen when their citizens couldn't get anything to eat?

What would they do if the hospitals decided it was too unsafe for their doctors and nurses to drive in (which it is) and closed?  I bet if Jerry Jones slipped on some ice and broke his leg they'd find a way to get the roads cleared for HIM.

I'm not upset that the schools closed.  The roads are AWFUL.  I do not want the kids out on the road.  But it puts the parents in a rough spot because retail workers, service providers (non-government) are all still expected to show up at work.   And they have no child care.

And those workers are expected to go to work and it's UNSAFE.

The city should do something more about the roads.  Waiting for it to melt is a lame plan.  It's okay for 1-2 days.  But by day 3 you really should clear the main thoroughfares so that at least those that need to call an ambulance can get to their destination in semi safety.  Babies are still being born.  People are still cutting themselves on kitchen knives.  People still need to get food.

So while the government just says "shut down" and wait till it's over, that's not really a real option for normal people.

Point of note though ... it is an option for me and my family, Lewis works from home and Grady and I just hang out.  But I was just thinking about the grocery stores and the doctors.  They still have to go to work.  And it's not fair that they have to put themselves at such risk.

Also - idiot Dallasites who don't know how to drive on ice ... DO NOT HIT THE BRAKES.

Thanks much.
