Egypt
My big fear in Egypt, after the ousting of Mubarak, is who is going to be in charge now. The United States has no influence in this area any more. The reasons for this are a whole other post.
My husband would say that we should not have any influence in who their leaders are. In a perfect world, I would not disagree. But we do not live in a perfect world. And the Middle East is a backwards place with backwards traditions that have a tendency to disenfranchise or repress entire segments of their population (read: women, gays).
I'm scared of the Muslim Brotherhood. The name of the political party itself tells me that they are not friendly to women. Are there, achem, women leaders within that party? Something tells me no. So if the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power in Egypt, which its looking increasingly like they will, how far behind is Sharia law?
From their own spokespersons lips via USA Today, Sharia law is the demand of the Egyptian people.
Funny, I thought they wanted freedom, jobs and a better life. But I guess, as with many things Muslim, those things only apply to the men.
It depresses me, as it has from day one. The uprising in Egypt was either going to lead to massive civilian casualties or ... well this I guess. I was really afraid of Mubarak killing his own people. But now it looks like the new leaders will be the ones to do that, only the Muslim Brotherhood will only kill infidels, adulterers (women only of course) and gays.
It's so depressing.
Also, many, many, many prayers for the journalists over there trying to tell this story. My heart breaks for the reporter from CBS who was sexually assaulted amid the "celebration" of Mubarak's fall. I don't understand. I don't understand any of it. I hope she is safe now.
