Dream Act Dead, DADT Repealed
Thank the ever loving world, the Dream Act was not able to break cloture, so it's tabled. But, with a Republican majority in the House next session, they won't be able to bring it back next year. Thank the ever loving world.
Now, I have not blogged about the Dream Act here before. Because I have an infant. And he requires much attention. But I have been following it's progress.
There are a million things wrong with the Dream Act. The first of which is it's little more than back door amnesty to millions of people who are here illegally. I don't really have time (nap time is almost over) to go through everything that's wrong. But the cruxt of my opinion is thus:
We should not be dealing with illegal immigration by granting amnesty of any kind. We should deal with illegal immigration by enforcing the laws that are written. Either that, or just repeal all of our immigration laws to a "come one and all" approach. Otherwise we're just spitting on all the people that go through the beaurocractic red tape to become a citizen.
I'm glad it's dead.
As to DADT. I am wary of it. The every day normal people (both gay and straight) are not the ones that trouble me. What troubles me are the activists among us, who will use this to make a point, and will demand to use the womens restrooms (or vice versa), or to wear the womens uniform (or vice versa), or to sleep in the women's quarters (or vice versa). Because those will be the troublemakers. Those will be the ones that make the units unsafe and hurt morale.
On it's surface, I would say it's a good thing. It was an antiquated rule that was enforced intermittenly. But the military and sex just dont get along. Never have. I imagine there will be new rules (and new jail times / court martials) for different things as relates to this repeal. Which is as it should be, I suppose.
