No More Princesses
According to this article which quotes the head of Disney, they are not going to be making Princess movies in the immediate future. "Tangled," is their last one.
The rationale, is that girls do not want to be Princesses anymore. "By the time they're 5 or 6, [girls are] not interested in being princesses. They're interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values."
The quote made me want to cry. And while I know there are probably many (too many) young girls out there that do worry more about looking like Miley Cyrus than being a fairy princess, I saw a lot of princess costumes at Halloween. So I think that Disney is being a bit premature. It's good to try and look for movies that attract both girls and boys (The Lion King duh) ... don't go around assuming that all young girls grow out of wanting to be a princess.
I happen to know two young girls whom I hope enjoy being princesses for quite a while longer.
