My Thoughts

My thoughts on yesterday's election results ... I'm unimpressed until we start to see some fiscal retraint.  I'm unimpressed until we see the Tax Cuts extended because um ... if they dont that affects my monthly bottom line quite a bit.  It's all about me, you know.  I tease.

I'm disappointed that Harry Reid is still going to Washington, living in the Ritz Carlton, and in control of the Senate.  I had no illusions that Democrats would lose control of that chamber, but I truly hoped they'd have to find a new majority leader.

I listened to President Obama's presser today at noon CDT and I'm unimpressed there too.  He doesn't get it.  He thinks, like that columnist last week, that he didn't go far enough.  He thinks, that his base didn't go out to vote and that's why he lost.  Powerline has information that shows that turnout was about the same as it was in 2008 (a few percentage points difference - well within margin of error) and that what swung the vote to Reps were the Independents that went R instead of D.

And he refuses to see that this election was about his agenda and spending.  Well and jobs.

There was one point during the conference where a reporter brought up that in the 2006 midterms, during President Bush's press conference, GW said he took a "thumpin."  He asked President Obama how he felt about the results, and President Obama attempted to humanize himself by saying it felt bad.

A few moments later he said he took a shallacking.

I found this to be interesting.  He had shied away from saying (at the beginning of the presser) that it was a wave or a referendum, but than later on, after reminded of Bush and his candor, he admitted that it was a beating.

It could be a coincidence.  But I definitely noticed the change after someone pointed out 43.

Also - a reporter brought up that after the 08 election, President Obama had a meeting with Republican leaders and said, "elections have consequences, and I won."  Pretty much telling them to pony up to what he wanted and to shut up about it.

He side stepped that question pretty much and went on to policy issues like Cap and Trade that will have to be tabled for now (thank heavens!).

My instincts tell me that in an effort to keep momentum going Republicans will be an opposition party and say "No" a lot and won't get much of their agenda enacted.  I think portions of the Bush Tax cuts will be passed but that taxes on those making over $250K will be left to lax, and that businesses / corporations will feel the brunt of that and job growth will worsen.

I think the RNC and NRCC will let jobs continue to remain flat, because they know that in 2012 if jobs still aren't robust it will make re-election harder for all Dems, including Presbo.  And for the RNC and the Republicans, it's all about re-election and 2012.  I sincerely hope I am wrong about this.  I would like to see jobs come back.

But the simple truth is, that many of them are gone forever.  Millions of manufacturing and unskilled jobs are just gone.  And until the market finds another unskilled sector that can boom and grow, those people formerly in those fields will be unemployed.

There were many that were voted in yesterday that promise they are different.  We shall see.
