Violence

The song is Love the way you lie.  It's by Eminem and has a chorus with Rhianna.  The lyrics are not for children, and are R rated.

I have serious issues with this song.  Eminem has a confusing and destructive relationship with his wife (or ex-wife? I don't know) Kim.  Many songs of his are dedicated to her death and one of them talks about him murdering her.  He's a peach, ain't he?

This song inparticular bothers me because one, it's really catchy.  And it's dramatic.  And in a world of teenage girls addicted to the drama of Twilight, I worry.

Rhianna, for her part, should know better.  She was recently in the news because her former boyfriend, Chris Brown, beat her.  And she went back to him.

Now I can listen to this song and hear the nuances and understand the grown up emotions, I can hear it and realize that these two people are in a destructive, unhealthy circle and they need help.  They need to get out.

I imagine a 15 year old girl hearing this song and thinking, even if he hits me, we're so in love, it's inevitable it will be violent, I should stay with him.

It's awful, how glorified the violence is.

That's what happens when a tornado meets a volcano Eminem sings.  Yes, just too strong personalities.  It's inevitable that the woman gets beat up.

And maybe if it was fiction.  Maybe if it was just a song.  But it isn't.  This is his life.

And this was (is) Rhianna's life.  And she went back.  So sad.

I'm with this author.  I don't understand the glamorization of domestic violence in this way.  I think most domestic violence victims would say that they did not LOVE the way their abusers lied.  I don't think they would say that the LIKED the way it hurts.  I think they would say they felt shame, and remorse, and trapped.  I think they would say they stayed for thier children, or they stayed because they had no money, no family.  I don't think most would say they stayed because they loved the way they lied.

Violence isn't sexy.  It isn't love.  And relationships that are violent don't mean that the partners love each other more.  I wish someone would stand up and talk / sing about courting, and committment, and mutual respect that starts from a more platonic plateau and not sex.

This song is catchy.  It makes me sad about our culture.  And the future of our girls.

I'm so with you. I always thought the goal in a relationship was to find someone who made you feel good about yourself. This idea that with great love and passion, there must be some eruption is so foreign to me.

One of the things my [mild expletive] ex said as a reason for breaking up was that we never fought. I was so shocked because in my view, not fighting is a good thing. The fact that we got along so well without ever raising voices seemed like an indicator of a healthy relationship. I certainly didn't equate it with a lack of strong feelings for each other. He does like Eminem...
