NOW they want G Dub's Opinion

Mosque supporters beg George W. Bush to come to Obama's rescue

Mosque supporters include Maureen Dowd of NYT, Eugene Robinson of WaPo, and the editor from New Republic.  They want President Bush, whom they say, if nothing else, he values religion, all religion, to comment on whether or not they think the Mosque should be built in the shadow of Ground Zero.

The irony of this, I find amazing.

Now, I have not looked into this mosque situation as much as I should have.  But like any other person, of course I have an opinion ...

Against my senses, I find no reason that the Mosque can't be built near or on Ground Zero.  If the land is for sale, and these people have the money, is this not still a free economy?  They should be able to purchase it.

It's in the poorest of taste.  And if the land is privately owned, than yes, the private owner can withhold the sale based on moral grounds because he can sell to whomever he chooses.

But the state doesn't have that luxury.

It's in the poorest of taste.  The city of New York and New Yorkers and the 9/11 victims families have every right to be put out.  I do think it's another example of Muslims asserting their authority over what they view as a weak United States.

But what they view as weak, we view as freedom.  And I don't want their version of strength to dominate in my country, where the government can dictate who says what, who buys what, and who does what.

Greek Orthodox Church Not Allowed to Rebuild?

Per my mother's sage advice, I did a quick google search and there is, in deed, a Greek Orthodox Church that was actually destroyed in the 9/11 attacks and has not been allowed to rebuild.  Port Authority originally had come to an agreement with the church, but the negotiations fell threw and PA has since said they will not revisit it.

Huh?

So now, I'm on the verge of changing my mind.  I can not allow the freedom means something different for Islam than it does for any other religion, simply because politicians are AFRAID of Islam.  Which it seems to me, they are.

The Greeks pose no threat.  Muslims, on the other hand, well we can't appear intolerant to them.  Greeks, ah who cares.

I think you should look into why they are allowing this mosque to be built but they won't allow the congregation of the Greek Orthodox church rebuild their church which was destroyed by the towers falling down.

I have a tough time seeing the argument against this building. The land was for sale and Muslims have a right to worship.
I'm not even sure it is in poor taste to buy land their and build a mosque; however, I can see how people feel that way.
I think they have every right to build however, and as a country that prides itself on a free economy and religious freedom it is crazy hypocritical to deny it. But, who knows, maybe we need to temper down some Constitutional amendments, heck the 14th is up on the chopping block now.

This morning I actually heard W's voice on NPR, they broadcasted a tape of him after 9-11 differentiating the between the fanatics who acted on 9-11 and those everyday people who practice the Muslim religion. I don't think I ever heard that much of W actually talking on NPR. They never broadcast him saying anything. If they were going to report on what he said when he was president they would pull quotes and have a newsreader say it. (Then they would have some other prominent figure on to counter what W said) Now they are joining in with others who want him to weigh in on this issue. It is amazing to me that they bring someone who they had no respect for, never believed he actually was the truly elected President in the first term and reported that frequently, now they want to use him to fix this issue that the current President stupidly stepped into. Hypocrisy isn't even a big enough word for this.
Now there are Muslim intellectuals who are says this is a Zionist plot to continue to make Muslims look bad. A bit of distorted thought process, but it is out there.
What I have difficulty with is how can all of these people who so easily ridicule/condemn Christianity for even questioning the appropriateness of same-sex marriage, they champion a religion that at minimum condemns gay behavior and for those who live in Muslim countries gay behavior is punishable by death. And I have real difficulty with women who live in a Western culture (US) championing a religion that actively tries to control female behavior. Do they not see how women are treated in Muslim countries? Maybe they feel insulated by our separation of church/state but they should talk to the gun rights people to see how insulated they feel about their rights.
People have the right to practice their religion if they do it by choice. But I am uncomfortable with a religion that classifies persons who do not practice said religion as Infidels, and infidels can be treated any number of ways depending of what kind of Muslims one runs into.
