The Times Square Attempted Bombing
I'm so grateful that Faisal Shazhad was/is an idiot. Otherwise, this would be an entirely different post. The only people we have to thank for avoiding tragedy, is God for making Shazhad an idiot, because had he had the right materials, his SUV would not have just smoked, it would have exploded, massively injuring and destroying a historic part of downtown New York City.
President Obama had an interesting moment the other day with a teleprompter (via Newsbusters), when he seemed to want to say that the Fed had stopped this act of terrorism. When in reality, had the bomb been set up properly, Shazhad was able to drive an SUV into Times Square, park it, and run away all before the car started smoking and anyone noticed. No law enforcement would have been able to do anything except clean up.
It's a great thing this tragedy was averted.
But the awesome coverage by some of the press is making me want to vomit. The new line is that Shazhad was "living the American dream" and suddenly decided to throw it all away to do this dastardly act. Evidence of the American dream? He was married, had kids, and owned a home. Evidence of his fall from grace? He stopped paying his mortgage. Not sure how his failure to meet his debt requirements is his life "unraveling," but I guess if you write for the AP you can editorialize crap like that.
This meme was repeated on ABC, who quoted Mrs. Evil Bomb Plotter's facebook page as evidence that she was a good person. Because we are what we facebook. And watch on TV.
There is no investigation into how he became hooked up with the terrorists that encouraged him to do this. Or when. Or if it was before he became a US citizen. There's no asking why he was going back to Pakistan. It's just assumed because he stopped paying his mortgage, he hit some sort of financial hole, and was going home.
How about this ... he stopped paying his mortgage because he knew he was about to blow up a chunk of New York City and vacate the country on the first flight out of LaGuardia (or JFK in this case).
There is so much wrong with the reporting on this story. From news media talking heads lamenting that he's a Muslim and not a Tea Partier, to people wanting him to be a lone gun man without international terrorist support, to those that want to say he was a disgruntled American, who hated George Bush and therefore wanted to blow things up.
I'm so very, very, very grateful that no one was hurt, that Shazhad was/is an idiot and is now in police custody. Reading about how the authorities caught up with him is like following a spy movie. All cell phone traces and satellite survelliance. Not sure how I feel about big brother and all that - and New York City is about to get a big dose more of it since this huge weakness has been revealed - but I'm very glad idiot bomber was caught.
Lots of news this week ... I have thoughts on the oil spill, Arizona immigration enforcement, and lots of other things. Prayers for us all and those that have to make decisions regarding the spill. There are many who are without livelihoods now. Yuck.
