The NYT is Delusional
Why So Glum? Numbers Point to a Recovery
Reading the above is like reading a sugar coated computer screen through rose colored glasses in a room that has a pink light bulb in the fixture. All bright eyed and pink. Nary a cloud to be seen.
The author talks about how signs point to a recovery. Yes, yes they do. But there are also signs that point to a double dip recession, which is what our financial guy told us, and is trying to prepare us for. Which is what his industry experts are telling him.
Why?
Because the debt level in this country is ridiculous. And in order to start paying back that money, the treasury will still either have to print money, or raise the rates to make more money. If they print money, we risk hyper inflation, if we raise rates, still shaky credit markets will freeze and businesses won't be able to get loans to add on, expand, etc. Hence, the recession hits again.
Irregardless of this, you'd have to be a simpleton who's never worked in a private business enviornment not to understand what midsized and small businesses are looking at for the next few years. Higher taxes. They will have to pay more money into nothing, making less because their customers have evaporated. They can't hire anyone in an enviornment like that. Small businesses are exactly and expressly those that are hurt by the tax increases to those that make $200K+.
The job news is still not good. The only sector that's growing is the government. Which is the only sector that does not make any money on it's own. What happens when the government grows and the private sector stagnates? Not good, that's what happens.
Um, if the only differences were the WORDS being used, than yeah, the Republicans could be as wrong and the Dems were then. But there are some HUGE POLICY differences between 1982 and 2010. Reagan was lowering the tax burden on businesses, cutting back on spending by defunding projects. Obama, on the other hand, is growing the size of government, hand over fist, and increasing the deficit. These things can't be wished away just because Wall Street had a good week and the jobs report for the first quarter is inflated because the Fed hired way more census workers than they needed.
And if the White House thinks people are mad at them now ... just wait until gas hits $4 this summer. Which it looks like it's going to.
I have no doubt that some sectors of the economy are improving. And that some areas of the country are improving. I can see that in my husband's business and in our local area. But I also see people still out of work for 2+ years, and not able to find a job. I also see people still getting laid off, and businesses not rehiring for positions that free up (my company has had three people quit. They won't be hiring for any of those positions).
As long as millions are unemployed or underemployed, you will not see the attitude turn around. Americans like to work and earn livings. Until they are back to work, you won't see happy faces in many parts of the nation.

In 1982, Democrats scoffed at a surging stock market and thought a severe recession would last for a very long time. They were confident that the economy would doom Ronald Reagan’s re-election campaign in 1984. All they had to do was make clear they offered a stark alternative to the failing policies of the incumbent.
Change a few words (Reagan to Obama, Democrats to Republicans, 1984 to 2012) and you have an accurate description of the current political climate. Could the Republicans be as wrong now as the Democrats were then?
