They Don't have the Votes
The big question on the news shows this afternoon is whether or not Nancy has the votes to pass the health care bill via "Deem and Pass" or not.
The short answer is, she doesn't. Otherwise, she'd have moved to bring it to the floor by now.
So no matter what Hoyer, Larson and Pelosi herself, say, they don't have them. Believe me, if they had them, they'd have moved. Clyburn, the majority whip (who's sole job is to count votes), says he's short. He needs 216, he doesn't have them yet. He says it's going to be even closer on this one than it's been on previous ones.
See, Pelosi thinks Deem and Pass makes voting aye more appealing to her moderates and her unsure votes. It does not. A vote for Deem and Pass is a vote for the Senate bill as is, and these members know this. Regardless of whether or not their name is on the record for Deem and Pass or the Senate Bill, their opponents in the fall will call it the same thing ... a vote for health care. And, a vote for Deem and Pass means they not only approved the Senate bill, but they used an underhanded method to get there, and they were too cowardly to put their name on it.
There are a bunch of newspaper editorials out today, from traditionally progressive / liberal papers, that say this has gone too far and that if they don't have the votes they should back down and go home.
Couldn't agree more. I hate that Nancy is saying vote for it now and we'll tell you what's in it later. That is absolute poppycock. She needs to lose her gavel. I'm so tired of the way she's running things. Most ethical congress ever my left foot.
