Record Deficit

So the President is sending the budget to Congress today, with another record setting deficit.  His budget requests $3.8T, making the deficit this year $1.6T.  I'm not a math major, but isn't that almost half of the budget that we don't have the money for?

I know that in a down economy, deficit's rise.  I know that when paying for wars, deficit's rise.  I know that when interest rates are low, it makes sense to borrow money as it's low cost to do so, and you can get a lot of things accomplished with little interest rates.  I know all of these things.

I also know, as I mentioned, that I'm not a math major or an accountant.  But these budgets are just flipping ridiculous.

I was encouraged last week when I saw that he had found $20B worth of cuts.  I was skeptical, but encouraged.  Last year's budget deficit was $1.4T, which was a record setting deficit from the year before THAT.  So now I'm not so encouraged.  What's the point of cuts if you're just going to raise the deficit even more?  Isn't that sort of like bringing sand to the beach?  Or something?

Here's the thing people ... if I were spending $.46 of every dollar earned towards credit card debt, that would be unsustainable.  In that instance, you can either do one of two things ... make more money, or spend less.

In the spend less category (which I tend to think is more realisitic than the make more money option), lets see what does one get rid of?  Cable, internet (sob!), phones, dinner out, car payments ... the list goes on.  For the car, you might lose some initially if you have to do a trade-in or sell it outright, but the point is to lower the monthly committments.

So tell me, why does the Federal government think it can live outside of it's means?  Why does it think it can have the $700 car payment, the iphone, the every channel cable plan, the lawn service, the cleaning service, and high end plastic surgery, etc. etc on a $30,000 a year salary?

And you can only blame this stuff on President Bush for so long.  Yes, he had record spending too.  Yes, it was awful.  But if you are continuing that same philosophy, you can't turn around and bash the guy.  Obviously you love what he did or you wouldn't continue doing it!

Obama can not hide from the fact that he was a member of the Senate during the last years of the Bush administration. He was a member of the majority party of both the house and the senate. He voted for all most all of the financial legislation during that time. So it seems to me that he approved of all financial legislation that was passed that continues to effect the mess we are currently in. In MHO he is more interested in maintaining and growing the dependent class than in saving the working public's money.
