Afghanistan

President Obama is kicking Charlie Brown Christmas off the TV tonight so he can speak from West Point (What a great photo op!) and announce that he will be sending 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan.  With some Marines deploying as soon as two weeks and being in theater by Christmas.  Merry Christmas to you too, Mr. President.

In reading the NYT peice linked above:
Mr. Obama spent more than 20 hours in 10 meetings in the Situation Room with his top national security advisers from Sept. 13 until last Sunday.
This is probably a lot of time for a President, who's time is managed down to the second.  But 20 hours?  In almost two months?  Like I said that's probably a lot, it just doesn't read like a lot, to me.

The thing about this that bugs me, is that the President took his sweet time deciding what to do, and now that he's finally made a decision, the military are the ones who are going to scramble and make up the difference.  And, what's worse, he's set to publically announce (declare) that almost all troops will be removed by 2011.  So all the Taliban need to do is lay in wait until the Marine's go home, and then pounce on the unsuspecting Afghanis we've left behind.

I'm also irritated he's going to be talking during Charlie Brown Christmas.  What a scrooge.

Something else you need to know ... President Obama plays golf every Sunday at the course on Andrews AFB.  Every Sunday.  As most of you know, that is a day off for Federal Employees (even many military members) but if the President is coming to your base to play, procautions must be taken, security must be present, and it's an "all hands on deck" type of atmosphere.

I understand every once in a while, he is the President but he deserves some leisure time.  But one wonders, if he knew how much of a hardship it was to accomodate these repeat visits, would he continue to do it?  Does he know?  And just not care?

And let me just point out again ... the military serves the President.  So when he calls, they will go.  And some will complain and the families will grumble, but they will go, and they will serve.  Because that is what they do.  As a Brat, I complain because they can't, and won't.  Most will salute, pick up their bags, and do their job.  Because they are awesome.

But it would be nice if I felt like the President took his job protecting them or ordering them seriously.  I just don't have that confidence.  I'm certainly biased.

God Bless our military and the Marines who will be deploying in a few weeks time.  I will have them and the families they are separated from in my heart this Christmas.

Apparently James took his new skill of 'I know which button turns off the t.v.' to a new level tonight. I had the t.v. on and the very moment the President came on t.v. James walked up there and turned it off. I said 'NO James' and we turned it back on - and then James turned it back off. This back-n-forth went on several times. It's almost like James didn't want the President on the t.v. Just kind of funny.
