Olympics and Issues
I'm happy for Rio, and sad for the United States. Like I said I typically like hosting the olympics, even though now I read that most of the host cities end up knee deep in debt trying to pay for all the infrastructure that is required, and that those buildings, after the olympics are over, end up sitting empty.
This doesn't look so good for Mister and Madame President, but I don't really think it's there fault. I think it was Rio's time. Brazil has never been a host city and if I'm remembering what I read correctly, Latin America hasn't hosted at all. But I do think he got bad advice from whoever told him to go over there and pitch for Chi Town. It looks bad, and perception is, unfortunately, reality. Times UK is saying that this "failure will only add to doubts about his Presidency." The article goes on to list things he is not doing so hot at.
Can we focus on the more important issues now? Like what we're going to do about a 9.8% jobless rate that's really probably closer to 17%, all in? Is there something we can do to entice businesses to hire rather than fire? Because they seem to continue to fire and do more with less.
So while CNN and the pundits all gasp and sigh and reminate on how mean the IOC is, the workers in this country, as the chairman of the IOC said in his remarks today, are worried about their paychecks. I think we need to realign our focus.
On this, and Afghanistan. Hopefully Obama's first order of business as he hits ground today is to meet with McChrystal and make some decisions.
And point of note ... Chicago is my dad's home town. It would have been nice to have the Olympics there, even though I don't think the cities corrupt infrastructure would make it a pleasant experience, it would have been memorable to see it there.
