Check

Waiting for check mate.

This sort of intelligent parliamentary / political manuevering is what I love and loathe about Washington politics.

You see, because the Republicans may or may not like the bill they are supporting, they just want to slow down the process.  And the Dems, who support the bill, are going to have to oppose the bill, otherwise the whole program be put on hold until after the summer recess.

What about that do I love?  It's tricksy, but legal, and it's the political two-step.  I'm a politics junky.  Less so than I was 6 years ago, but still.

What about that do I loathe?  It's more game playing by people who are paid for with money out of my wallet.  And that really tweaks my nose that they do tricksy things like this.

But I do not like the cash for clunkers program.  Why?  Because they aren't all clunkers.  The cars still run.  And it encourages people who may not all be in great financial shape to take on a new burden of a new car loan.  And buying a new car ranks as the top financial mistake that people make.

It's a depreciating asset.  Two minutes after you sign on the line it's worth a lot less than the two minutes before you signed.

It only makes sense to buy new if you're going to keep it forever and have no worry on resale value.  Or if your a germophobe.  :)  Haha.  I make myself laugh.

I say all this ... but we buy electronics like they are going out of style and those are TOTALLY depreciating assets.  It's like sinking money down a well.

Anyway - I actually think the bill allowing those that make under X amount to receive the cash and not those that are over is okay.  It's a little socialist.  But in this economy, I know a lot of people in such situations that would benefit a lot from a newer car and maybe the added help would get them in better shape.

But the whole thing proves that cash incentives ... cash given to the people ... that is what stimulates the economy.  I know so many people that are buying houses this year that were going to otherwise wait because they want the $8K.  And I know many people that are taking advantage of the car program too.  Just imagine what more cash incentives would do.
