Sarah Palin's Announcement
So when I heard Sarah Palin was resigning her position as Governor, my first thought was: Trig is sick. And my second thought was, her career is over.
So I'm a little confused as to why some talking heads are going on about how this helps her ready for the 2012 election. Why? Because she can campaign for an extra two years? Because she can start campaigning now?
The thing I liked about Palin was that she didn't campaign all that much. I liked that she had a day job that she loved that required some leadership skills, working long hours, and that she didn't work inside the Beltway.
Powerline sums it up better than I can. The fact that she is quitting doesn't really instill a lot of confidence in me. I can respect it, if she is choosing family over her career, but it doesn't make her qualified for a 2012 run. Point of fact, my thought was that she'd have 4 more executive years of experience under her belt and would then be more qualified to run, more than likely as VP again.
But quitting to go on book tours and campaign around the country for GOP'ers fighting it out in 2010 makes me nervous. That's buying into the establishment crap. I don't want a dedicated campaigner running for office. I want a public servant who views her committments to her constituents above the demands of party leadership. If this choice was made to give her more free time to hit the campaign trail, because the GOP thinks they've found a fundraising work horse, that makes me sad.
I wish her the best. I think she's an awesome individual with a beautiful family. But I believe this is the end of her political career.
And PS - if she quit because of the constant berratting by the media, because she had a big target on her back, and it was just too hard on her family, I can respect that too. I, for one, would not subject my family to those sorts of things. But those issues, the constant attention, the background questions, the digging, the snide remarks, the late night talk show jokes, none of those things would go away if she ran in 2012. They will increase. So I hope, if those reasons are her reasons, that she gives serious thought before putting her hat in the ring in 2012. I still like her, believe in her, and I think her and I line up pretty good politically. But ... if she can't stand the heat ...
