To a Hospital near you ... Sky News:
A single payer system won't make your health care better. It won't make it cheaper. It will make it harder to get quality treatments for you and your family. The current plans that are being discussed would kill the private sector, and would force us all onto the single payer, government option.
We all know I'm incredibly worried about this. But you should be too. Public support for it is falling but that just means Congress will get tricksy and put a bill in the hopper at 3:00AM and vote at 10:00AM so that noo ne has a chance to read it.
They are actually advocating doing that so that the public has less time to read it, understand it, and voice an opinion on it. They know that the more information comes out, the less support they have.
In some cases, the bills being proposed raise taxes and would crush the economy. Which I don't know if you've noticed ... but it's not doing so hot right now. This Health Care plan, in conjunction with Cap and Trade, would obliterate the US economy. I can't even fathom, really. Health Care would crush 1/6th of the US economy by destroying private insurance plans, and Cap and Trade would destroy manufacturing. We'd be in the stone ages.
And really ... think about this. You're mom needs a hip replacement. Is she the right age? How many surgeries has she had? What's her quality of life? And you aren't asking those questions, the government is, and you have to prove that your mother's hip replacement won't be a "waste." After you do that, you get on a waiting list.
Or even simpler ... your kid needs tubes put in their ears. All the same questions. The same waiting list.
Why? Because we already have a doctor shortage in this country. Fewer doctors practicing means fewer doctors to perform procedures. Equals waiting lists. And all the bills proposed, according to Mayo, are not patient focused, but are beaurocracy focused. That does not equal better care for anyone. And it does not excite more doctors into the field.
The other problem ... the legislation in committee leaves the liability burden on the doctors, and the Government will not be liable for any treatment, drug, etc. Which means doctors will still have the same insurance costs (sky high) and lower incomes.
Single payer / government run health care makes our health care a soup kitchen. With people standing in long lines, waiting for a handout that's bland, tasteless and not very satisfying. But it meets the basic, lowest possible needs.
Just don't have any special dietary needs. Because they can't help you.
In the new report, Patient Safety, MPs use the Staffordshire case as an example that Government policy is still "too often" giving the impression that hitting targets, balancing finances and attaining Foundation Trust status are more important than patient safety.

I agree that some of this will get done in the cover of night and will probably be less than what I imagine. But that is politics from both sides.
Other specific disagreements. Manufacturing is not the backbone of the American economy anymore. You could argue it should be, but it's not. Secondly just because 1/6 of our economy is private insurance plans doesn't make that right. If 1/6 of our economy was based on slave labor (obviously a hyperbolic example) we shouldn't maintain the status quo. Nor should we now.
But my mind is shot today after a week of camp and now VBS I can't really adequately debate you. Glad to see your sister got wedded, the pics looked great.
Passing bills that no one reads is terrible and awful and that should not be politics as usual and that is no way to get things done.
Right now, you have to have surgery for your daughter. You are taking her to a very expensive, very well regarding surgeon because he is the best.
Do you think, under a government run plan, you would be allowed to choose that same doctor?
This plan destroys freedom of choice because it forces those of us who are middle / low incomes onto the cheapest option. It won't save you money. It won't save me money. It'll raise taxes on both of us and probably cost me my job.
But what's that matter when you're buying votes and passing legislation that has no hope of actually curbing the rising cost of health care?
I certainly don't think passing a bill in the middle of the night is the correct way to run congress, I just think it is the way congress is run. If I had my drothers I would love to have a clear bill (probably doesn't need to be 1200 pages) that is presented and then can be read by concerned constituents.
In any event, I agree that I don't see how private insurance can compete with a government plan and I have no idea how Dems say that "If you like your insurance you won't have to change" I find that to be non-sense. So yes, my insurance and perhaps yours (though your husbands company is large enough that they may be forced to keep the more expensive private insurance for employees) will change. I just don't find that change to be scary.
It is out of great sacrifice that I can even afford to have surgery for my daughter. I will be paying that bill for year(s) and I have a decent paying gig and I have insurance (though not the greatest out there).
So I am effectively hampered for the next X number of months until I pay my bill (whilst paying my insurance premiums). That is the system we have now, and I will pay my bill, but people with less income than me would not be able to have the surgery at all for their child. I don't mind being taxed, I just want my tax dollars to work for me, my family, and my country.
We are at two opposing ends. I want to keep my insurance, which I love, and you want someone else to pay for yours because you hate yours.
The compromise being offered is that you get what you want and I suffer and have to lower my expectations and get rationed. Which means many things that are covered under my current policy will probably not be covered under a government provided plan.
So I will pay more to get what I want, all while paying more taxes so that the government will pay for your daughters surgery, even though she has to wait three years to get it.
The government has never run anything well. You're taking your kids OUT of government run schools because they are so lousy. What do you think they will do to health care?
