Iran Elections
When I leave my "world," I tend to pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist either. So I heard only peripherally about Iran's elections, it being called within minutes of the final polls closing, the chaos, the riots, the fatwas. And I just want to say ...
That is one thing we take advantage of in this country; smooth transitions of power.
I heard President Obama's remarks on Friday, regarding the "robust debate." I kind of just roll my eyes at that, like the President Bush, I saw his soul and he's my friend speech with Valdmir Putin. If Iran allowed robust debate pigs were flying somewhere. Robust debate? Oh yeah? How many women were allowed to run?
It just makes me sad when people give these great "oh look at them and their free democracy" comments to places like Iran. Do you know what those people think about women? There is no freedom when one half of the population is so heavily oppressed. Christian Science Monitor has more on why women were / are the most affected by this "landslide" victory for Ahmadinejad.
What's happening over there is really kind of amazing. Elections there have never been "free" by our definition of the word, but the youth there are hungry for their voices to be heard. It's amazing. Freedom is the right of all peoples. We should all stand up for that.
