I hate this picture. Maybe it's respectful. Maybe it's necessary. But I hate it. Again I have the urge to go home and burn all my scarfs in protest. I will not hide my face because a man told me to. I wish Hillary Clinton didn't have to either.
Hot Air has a whole post about President Obama's remarks on women in the Middle East. President Obama equated America's "struggles" with women's rights issues to those in Turkey, Egypt, etc. Why is this upsetting? Because one - I don't get stoned to death if I get raped, or for being alone at home with a man who isn't my husband or any other such ridiculous thing and two - I don't get thrown in jail for writing this post, like many women in that part of the world do.
Obama goes on in his speech that he respects a womans choice to choose a traditional role, and that he will support any country that wants to promote literacy and jobs for women. But this region has far greater - maybe not greater - let's say baser problems. Their Sharia laws allow for no justice for women, and women are painfully punished, abused and neglected at the hands of their male counterparts. The saying walk 12 steps behind did not spring up out of nothing. If we are really going to talk about women's rights for Middle Eastern women, we need to start with the basics.
And hey, maybe that's what he means. Maybe he thinks pushing literacy will get us there. I just ... I don't get that from hearing his speech. I hear him saying "bravo for your tremendous strides forward and we all have so far to go!"
America and the West is much ahead of these folks that the moral equivalency here is laughable.
In the name of religion, Islam has been able to handicap many of their women. This part of the world has abominable human rights violations on this issue that would make water boarding look like a trip to the beach.

You are only one step removed from Neo-nazis and other extremists with your anti-(anything positive)Obama stance. I pray that you find a way to find happiness.
You can post constructive comments, dissenting opinions, and close to whatever you want, but you can't call me a Nazi. Kapeesh? It's still my blog sunny Jim.
If you read more carefully, you would see I find positive things that Obama has done. The handling of the Somali pirate situation, sending troups to Afghanistan, and I think he's an eloquent speaker who has a beautiful family that he loves.
My point here, is that we show respect for a religion that oppresses and denigrates women. The fact that women have to wear anything over their heads makes me crazy. It's not Hillary's fault. I realize the reasoning for it. But I hate it. Freedom of religion should mean that she doesn't have to, as she isn't Islamic.
We pardon everything this region does in an effort to appear tolerant to their religion. It's ridiculous. And the women of this region are the forgotten.
Again, if you have nothing constructive to add about the topic at hand, please troll somewhere else.
And remind yourself when you visit, this is my blog. Pretend your visiting my home. And show some respect. (Read: no name calling)
