The Firing of an Inspector General

Last Thursday, President Obama fired Inspector General Gerald Walpin.  From news reports (which are laughably limited) there wasn't a cause given.  Well, there was ... the President said he had "lost confidence in him."

Walpin had issued a report on June 4th that said tax payer money was being wasted through the Americorps program, and that City University of New York was getting unnecessary funding to the tune of $80M.  The chairman in charge of those funds is a large Obama supporter, who donated $800,000 to both the campaign and the inauguration fund.  CUNY is the largest receipent of Americorps funding.

After all the fuss was made over the firing of the US Attorneys in 2007, I would expect the MSM to cover this story just as doggedly.

ABC News has a blog piece (a must read) up detailing some particulars around the firing.  Including some negative press Walpin received from the acting Attorney General regarding inappropriate use of funds in Sacramento.  Walpin spoke to the press before letting the Mayor, Kevin Johnson (another Obama supporter and friend), know that the investigation had determined that funds given to St. Hope Academy were inappropriate and needed to be returned, and that City of Hope and Mayor Johnson would no longer be eligible for grant money.  Walpin maintains they were notified, and a copy of the complaint that was filed has not been made public.

The total amount that was deemed a waste of tax dollars? $800,000.  Half of which they were asked to return.  Only half.  Which is why Senator Grassley is asking for more information.

This new report issued on June 4th, must have been the straw that broke the camels back.  The White House can't have someone snooping through their funds and determining all their friends are crooked and engaged in fraud.

Another interesting story circulating, is the First Lady's Office's involvement.  If you read nothing else - read Youth Today's  piece.

The whole thing smells.  And in irony of ironies ... President Obama co-sponsored the Inspector General Reform Act of 2008 which required that if a President were to fire an IG he had to provide written documentation to Congress outlining his reasoning.  It also says they have to give the IG 30 days notice.  Which wasn't done.  Walpin was "removed."

So wierd.  I mean really.  Are we allowed to use tax payer money to have kids wash the Mayor's cars?  Because that's what Johnson was doing with some of the funds.
