Cap and Trade

UPDATED - MM's liveblog:
Ed Markey just finished blubbering about a future where gas stations are gone and all our children plug, uh, er, their cars, uh, er, in, utilizing, the electricity, for which to power their, uh, er, cars.
The brilliance dazzles me.  Really.  Where does the electricity come from, friend? If you just wish it, just it come to be?

UPDATED - my Congressman is voting NO.  Is yours?

The legislation would impose limits for the first time on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas pollution from power plants, factories and refineries. It also would force a shift from coal and other fossil fuels to renewable and more efficient forms of energy. Supporters and opponents agreed the result would be higher energy costs, but disagreed widely on the impact on consumers.
From Breitbart.  30 Democrats defected from the test vote and the Dems won 217-205.  It could still die.  But really, how could higher energy costs across the board NOT impact consumers?  You have to have a special switch in your head that blocks reality and logic if you think that it won't have a drastic impact on cosumers.

Bloomberg says Waxman-Markey will increase imports of oil as it becomes unprofitable to refine oil in the United States due to the new cap and trade legislation proposed in the bill.  Thats more jobs lost and gas prices that rise by $.77 a gallon just from the new taxes in the bill, not to mention the supply and demand changes that would raise the cost.  I don't know about you, but we've had pay cuts this year and if gas hits $4 - $5 a gallon there will be serious consequences at my house.  And we're some of the luckiest folks I know.  I can't imagine what those who've had layoffs will be faced with, should this pass.
----

Waxman-Markey is on the floor now.  It's creepy.  Really creepy.  The bill is over 1000 pages long and NONE OF THEM HAVE READ IT.

They barely finished it early this morning at 3:00AM, at which time Reps were given a 300 page amendment that did not inclucde 224 of the proposed Republican amendments.

From Times UK:
Out here in the real world, meanwhile, there are fewer and fewer of us who want any more of their money of wasted on this bizarre eco-fascist fantasy. It was an exciting and novel distraction in the good old days when we still felt rich and a bit guilty for being rich and wanted to devise new ways of punishing ourselves for our (perceived) eco sins. But not any more. We haven’t the money to bribe the Third World to reduce its carbon emissions; nor are our economies nearly strong enough to absorb the burden of green taxation and zealous and intrusive green legislation.
Read that whole article.  He makes a valid, valid point ... the world is not the same industrious, money filled place it was even one year ago today.  Our own economy is still falling.  We may well lower CO2 emissions just from this recession alone.  We don't need this bill to do that!

I don't really think I can stress how bad this bill is or has the potential to be.  This is the single largest tax increase on the United States public ... ever.  And because of it's PR lingo and midnight writing and STUPID CONGRESSMEN THAT DON'T PUBLISH THE BILLS BEFORE THEY VOTE ON THEM no one knows that.  It burns me to no end that they don't read these bills before they vote.

And the media just go right along.  Oh yeah, look at us saving the world.  Oh yeah, look at us telling mother nature what to do.

It's the most egotistical thing in the world to think that our stupid little human tricks can affect any real legitimate change on the weather.  We should all strive to have a clean enviornment, but not at the expense of human life.  And not based on JUNK SCIENCE that is increasingly found to be junk science.

This will just continue the recession.  This bill will force a whole new sector of the economy (energy) into a tailspin and force companies to lay off and cut more jobs.  So you'll have cars, banks and energy companies in the pocket of the US Federal Government.  Because you know they'll bail some of them out.

I really, really, really dislike Congress and their "I vote without reading."  This bill cost $3T.  Do you know that?  $3T.  That's $3,000,000,000,000.00  That's a lot of zeroes.  Call your congressmen.  Tell them they have to READ THE BILL before they vote.  Tell them you want to know what's in it before you're asked to pay for it.

I can't not believe that after they passed the stimulus package in February, the $1T stimulus meant to save jobs and the economy that we had to pass or unemployment would hit 8% (it's nearing 10% now) and GDP would plumett and the stock market would tank.  All of which happened.  AFTER THEY PASSED IT.  I can not believe that we're hear again.  With Congressional leaders forcing a bill on us or the sky will fall, and they don't even know what's in it.

This is pandering to leftist liberal groups and pay back for 30 years of support.  That's all it is.  I wonder how much money Democrat contributors get from this?  We all know Al Gore stands to make a fortune because he's heavily invested in the cap and trade firms that will be running this thing.

Ugh.

I think there are some that want our lifestyle to go back to the early 1900's. We would not travel far; we would only consume goods that are made within a defined small area of land. Overall, we should have far less material things. I think the “we” in these statements are the common folk. This lifestyle is definitely not for those prominent people who speak out for this lifestyle.

They would have us massively alter our lifestyle to make a fraction of a difference for the "earth".

What is really funny is that after we alter our lifestyle, smaller cars, less stuff, less money to spend because the government spends it more wisely, there will be a huge volcano that will erupt that will change the climate for several years and everything we have done will definitely be for naught. Mother Nature always shows who is boss.

I am fine with trying to conserve, however, my idea of conservation and someone elses may be different. I don't want to be dictated as to how I conserve. I don't live near my family, I realize that is my choice. I still would like to visit them without having to break the bank. Which is how these folks are going to change our behavior. If you want to do something not in line with their thinking, you will have to pay for it.
It is amazing to me that these people are so controling. I don't think they are much different then the religious organizations that they scorn for its controling nature.
