I'm not a fan of the designated hitter.  As a National League fan, I think it's lazy baseball to have a guy on the roster that can't play defense.  That's just me.

Manny Rameriz will always be a Red Sox guy to me.  And this news today that he's tested positive for something doesn't truly surprise me.  I think we will find that most of our amazing big, league hitters have been cheating or at least testing the system.

ESPN says he was caught using HCG, which is used as a fertility treatment to trigger ovulation.

A source with intimate knowledge of steroids told ESPN that a male athlete usually uses HCG after a cycle of steroids because steroids often shut down the testosterone-making ability of the testicles. HCG restores their capacity to make testosterone. The source said that some males may use HCG in lieu of steroids also. HCG by itself can provide a substantial boost in the body's own testosterone, and this may provide some performance-enhancement benefits.

All I can hope is the young guys coming up through the minors are seeing all this and thinking, man, I'm never going to be like those guys.
