Diane Sawyer and the Gas Tax

Diane Sawyer was arguing today on Good Morning America (via Newsbusters) that a European style gas tax would get Americans off foreign oil immediately, not in 2014 or 2016 or whenever.  Apparently she asked her question like a hundred times.

I love it when people who live in New York City who have great public transportation and have a city that is all of 300+ sq ml* (metro = 6,720 sq ml) think that the reason people drive cars is because of some greedy, nonsensical, irrational need to drive a car.  And that it's not a necessary part of life.

A gas tax a kin to what they have in Europe would cripple the heartland and those outside of the eastern seaboard.

*Dallas = 385 sq ml (metro = 9286 sq ml)
 Houston = 600 sq ml (metro = 10,062 sq ml)
 LA = 498 sq ml (metro = 4850)
 Kansas City Metro = 7,952 sq ml

Maybe we should make public transportation a priority.
