$3.4 Trillion Budget

To honor or commemorate or create a photo op or make a press story, the House passed the President's $3.4T budget.

"Today, for the first time in many, many years, we have a president's budget ... that is a statement of our national values," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said during the final debate on the House floor.

I may be jaded, but I see it more as a statement of how partisan we have become.  They all voted for what their leader told them to vote for.

I don't have any delusions.  Had President Bush put forth a $3.4T plan, the Republicans would have all voted for it.  So I can't be too happy about their 100% defection from this budget.

But we should really understand that this isn't President Obama's budget so much as it is Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid's.  They wrote it.  The White House asked them too.  And they threw in everything and the kitchen sink and the refrigerator and the washing machine.

With the economy in recession and the bailout of the financial sector costing hundreds of billions of dollars, deficits would rocket to $1.7 trillion for the ongoing budget year, dipping to a still-astonishing $1.2 trillion in 2010. The national debt would rise from today's $11.2 trillion level to $17 trillion at the end of 2014.

"The same Democrats who were outraged over a $455 billion deficit last year came to us this year with a budget that would lead to trillion dollar deficits," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. [FULL STORY]

I just can't believe how much debt they are giving us.  I can't believe how much we all are going to owe.

To me, this is like that CreditReport.com commercial.  The one with the guy singing "well I married my dream girl..." and then finds out that she owed a lot of money in credit card debt.  We openly married this Congress, this White House, and knew what we were getting.  But now it's like one part of this marriage is buying Fendi purses while the other is eating Ramon noodles to try and balance it out.  Washington is walking around with Fendi bags and the American tax payers are eating pork and beans to try and make ends meet.

At the same time that they surreptitiously burdened us with more debt than any one generation can pay off, they introduced pay-go legislation.  You know, to show how fiscally conservative they really are.

Some simple math, if we did pay as you go for the $3.6T, each American today would have to pay soemthing like $120,000.  That's every single American.  All 300M of us.  That includes babies, the elderly and those with disabilities.  And Congressman.  Except they cheat on their taxes.  Nevermind.

I know polling numbers are still high.  I believe that once people's energy costs go up 50% those will drop.  Still, if he gives rebates and tax incentives to those that make under X amount, they may stay in a decent range.  What saddens me about that is, the rest of us will be paying their share.  And the majority of Americans will then be those on the "doll" as it were.  Those supporting ourselves (and them) will be in the minority.

How long until that group gives up?  Were will we be then?

I've said this to a lot of people lately, but what depresses me is that when people from other nations wanted to escape their oppressive taxes and governments, they came here.  With our own taxes and government looming on oppressive ... where will people go then?  Where will we go?  Who will be the becon of freedom from government then?
