Know what happened here?
Initially, the companies said Dora's look would not be revealed until fall. They did release a silhouette showing she was trading in her tomboy shorts and bob haircut for longer hair and a short skirt, and that image caused a stir. [Full Story]
Over-protective parents with not nearly enough to worry about saw a silhouette of this:
and thought the girl was wearing a short skirt with no cute purple leggings. Which, from a style perspective, leggings were terrible in the 80s and never, ever, ever should have come back. So Dora really should not perpetuate a growing problem.
Nickelodeon is brilliant for trying to expand their base on this. Original fans of Dora are growing up and out of Dora for pre-schoolers, but are still young enough they might be interested in Dora for 7 year olds.
I think once parents saw the actual image, they went: "oh, nevermind then." Which would be exactly why Nickelodeon released it.
All this hubub over a miniskirt. Sheesh.
