Getting Ridiculous
The President of GM motors resigned today because the President of the United States told him to.
What kind of country are we living in that the President has such unlimited stretch and reach and power? Where does this end? What kind of check and balance is in place for this "tectonic change in the relationship between business and government in this era of subsidies and bailouts."
I'm flabbergasted. Between 90% taxes rushed through an emotional congress (and later tabled after they realized they needed the financial institutions support to get through this mess), a President who wants to dictate what CEOs of billion dollar companies make, and a Speaker of the House that thinks the Government actually makes it's own money, we are all in a whole lot of trouble.
Paulson (Treasury Secretary under Bush) told the CEO of AIG to step down, and put Richard Liddy in his place. Look how well people think that turned out.
It is a sad, sad, sad place we are living in right now. Because not only are we all in an economic recession and facing the realities of that, but we have a government that has the audacity to take advantage of this crisis in some of the biggest power grabbing I have ever seen (which admittedly, isn't much). But the same people that voted for these guys are the ones that were running around saying Cheney was taking too much control, he had too much power. None of them are saying anything when President Obama and Geitner seek unprecedented control over our banks and financial institutions.
The greatness of this country has never been our government, but our people. I hope some day we figure this out and vote these power grabbing idiots out of office.
And for the record, GM CEO Rick Wagner has been at GM for 30 years. Obviously he's entrenched and maybe there's a change needed. But do you want Geitner, who can't find anyone without tax problems to be on his own team , choosing who the leader of a major auto manufacturer is?
And now we have world leaders in China and Europe that are looking at us like we are insane. So, since back in October we were all worried about international opinion, can we talk about that again now? Because while they may all say we're greedy, ugly Americans, the fact of the matter is our economy and our free capitolism have fueled the successes of world economies all over. And if Obama socializes us, we become as profitable as the rest of them. Read: not profitable at all. Who will bail the others out then?
