The Inauguration

Obama hosting pricey party in a dicey economy
Unemployment is up. The stock market is down. Let's party.

The price tag for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration gala is expected to break records, with some estimates reaching as high as $150 million. Despite the bleak economy, however, Democrats who called on President George W. Bush to be frugal four years ago are issuing no such demands now that an inaugural weekend of rock concerts and star-studded parties has begun.

I don't begrudge him a celebration.  He's making history and millions of people will look to him as an inspirational figure.  He should have a big to-do.  But does it have to be $150M big?

I consider my wedding a big to-do, but I did it on a budget.  The end result was the same as anyone who pays millions, and I think most folks had a decent time.  My point being, he could throw a big party on a budget, and the end result would be the same.  He would still be President at the end of it, and people would still have a great time.
I am excited for the inauguration, we only see so many President's in our life times.  And this will be my third, and really, only my second in my adult life.  I'm excited to see what he plans on doing, if he can bring the country together as he's so promised, and if he can carefully transistion our economy from "buy now, pay later" to a more conservative, saving society.  I have my doubts, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of them.

I want to point out that very few gave the leaving President much credit.  He's been followed for 8 years by specters of Supreme Court rulings, wire taps (found to be legal by international review), torture, and war.  Some of these problems were missteps of his own making, some of them not.  He's been brandished a moron and a daddy's boy, bent on leaving a legacy that surpassed that of his father.  Bent on war.  I don't know the man.  I know I'm not happy with the budget we have and the expansion of government under his administration.  But I promise I will not spend one minute in the next four years despising someone I've never met.  I will not spend one second cursing Obama and his family.  We will more than likely disagree and he will probably drive me crazy on a couple of things.  But hey lots of people drive me crazy.  I hope he will, to the best of his ability, try and keep us safe.  Because he's not really in charge of the economy.  He's in charge of protection the Constitution and our people.  That should always be his number one priority.  But regardless of our differences, he is/will be the President of my country, and therefore deserves nothing less than my respect.

I can not say the same for the other side.  Who hated President Bush on sight, and spent the next 8 years spewing hatred, descension, and malice and blamed him for their actions.

lets hope those that "spewed the hatred, descension, and malice" will get off their behinds and try to make their circumstances and the countries circumstances better.
I don't have much faith, however, because as recent studies have shown they (those that voted for this administration) are not too smart and they definitly do not know much about the government of this country and more specificly who their leadership is. They seem to be waiting for this administration to feed their children and pay their rent.

However, it is good that the other side will have to be responsible for all of these people's comfort as well a being responsible for their security. The last being the one that gives me the most concern.
