Real QB

In a horrible loss against the Arizona Cardinals back in October, the Dallas Cowboys playboy quarterback, Tony Romo, was injured. Days (perhaps hours) after the game clock ran out, reports came out that Romo had hurt his hand. Shortly after that, we heard that he had broken his pinky. And he was out for 3 to 4 weeks.

3 to 4 weeks.  For a broken pinky.

After this announcement was made, Brett Farve called Romo on the phone and gave him some advice.  While I wasn't on the phone and didn't hear what he said, one could guess he brought up the fact that he's played with broken thumbs, ankles, addiction, and death in the family.

Romo can't play with a broken pinky?  Really?

It's not the same sport, but Curt Schilling literally bled for the Red Sox.  Bled!  I just asked my husband who else has played with broken bones, and he said, "every real athlete plays with broken bones.  I played baseball with broken toes."  He was a catcher.  Catchers notoriously have broken toes because a ball tipped off a bat at 80-100 miles an hour nails them.

But most recently, and most important to me, Graham Harrell played against the Baylor Bears on Saturday with two "shattered fingers" .  At half time they investigated it and wanted to take him out.  He argued, told them to tape it up, he was going back out there.

The very next day he had surgery on his hand to fix 9 broken bones.  They inserted 17 pins and 2 plates.

Tony Romo's pinky?  It didn't even require surgery.  4 weeks - and it DIDN'T REQUIRE SURGERY.

I don't know about you but I want my QB's on the field, not on the bench.  Graham Harrell is a great player, a great student, and is working on becoming a really great person.  He, in my ever so humble opinion, deserves the Heisman.  He's definitely more deserving than Sam Bradford at any rate.

17 pins and 2 plates and he says "tape it up, I'm going in."  Amazing.  I wish Romo was made of that stern of stuff.

I love this quote from Coach Leach about how the tie breaker should have been done:
"The Big 12 Conference should have an executive session tonight," Leach began, "and just say, Are we about the student-athlete? Are we trying to edify America and make this a better place? Are we actually doing the proper thing and balancing the dual role of both being an athlete and being a student?’ When they do that, I think they will find that no one’s more deserving than the Red Raiders to win the Big 12 South."
Yes that's right, we graduate more of our NCAA players than any other team in the Big 12 with a 79% graduation rate.  Graham Harrell was a scholar athlete!  We are far ahead of teams like, oh Oklahoma, who graduates under 50% of its student athletes.

At any rate ... Tony Romo's a baby.  Graham Harrell's the real deal.

To be fair, I think the decision for Romo not to play with the broken finger was not Romo's. I remember reading that he wanted to play, felt ready to play, but that the coaching staff said he wouldn't play. But it certainly is hard to imagine any coach winning that battle with Brett Favre... (Who is probably my all-time favorite qb. I think I'd go with him in his prime over anyone.)

But I did not know that about Harrell. That is definitely studly! Sorry about the rather deflating end to your regular season. We K-Staters went through a similar season in 1998, being so close to #1 in the last week of the season and then not even getting a BCS bowl in the end.

I remember thinking after we heard that they made up the pinky excuse to bench him because he was playing so bad. That still could be true.

But you're right, I can't imagine Favre sitting out a game even if the coaches were trying to make him. He's one of my favorites too. And if Graham is drafted (hope hope hope) I think he stands a real shot of being that kind of tough as nails guy. If he can hold up in the NFL that is. Which remains me to be seen.

Thanks for the comment, and no worries on our season. I'm still very proud. We'll be back!

Harrell has to have a better NFL shot than Brodie "breathe on me too hard and I'll wreck a joint" Croyle!
