To Finance a Campaign
Politico is turning into the worst bunch of crap.
First, in 2008 during the primaries both candidates said they would accept the public financing. And then, in the general election, only one did.
Second, are they saying that no other candidate in history will be as popular as Obama? Surely the same denizens that donated to his "historic" campaign will be donating again in the future, right? What's more likely is no one will be able to raise as much money as Obama did legally.
Yes, and no word on how many of those 3 million are actually unique contributors, or are legal residents of the US.
Politico does not mention one time the way that Obama collected these funds, by essentially shutting off credit card security measures. I could have donated to his campaign with the name mickey mouse 100 times with the same credit card in amounts of $200. For a grand total of $20,000, well over the campaign finance laws that limit contributions to $2,300.
I don't think any other candidate will ever collect as much money as Obama did. Not legally anyway.
Clearly, no serious candidate will rely on the public funding system during the primary phase of future presidential campaigns. The 2008 race marked the second time the leading contenders shunned the program during the nomination fights.
But the general election kitty for public financing – at $85 million this year – could still have appeal for future candidates simply because Obama’s performance will be difficult, if not impossible, for many candidates to match.

Obama’s fundraising apparatus also was unique in that it attracted more than 3 million donors, the vast majority of whom never gave him more than a total of $250.
