VP Debate Comments
To begin, I thought Ifill's job as moderator was good. She did better than Jim Lahrer at the Pres debate earlier. I thought the questions were okay. And the only time I detected anything really was when she commented that they were both opposed to gay marriage. I don't think she liked that much.
My expectations of this were that Biden was going to try and keep his mouth shut and "do no harm." I thought Palin was going to try and prove herself as worthy and smart (in contrast to how she appeared with Couric).
Husband and I watched the same debate. And he felt like Biden won. He said Biden attacked McCain more, and he came away with the fact that McCain voted for such and such 400 times or something (I can't remember what the quote is, I'm not being snarky or anything). He thought Palin did really well, but that the debate went to Biden.
Myself, I was very pleased with Palin's performance and I liked her much better after it than I did going into it. I think she's handcuffed by McCain's views and votes and I would love, love, love to hear what she really thought of this bailout bill other than just "disappointed."
A couple of things that she did not do well; in the beginning she avoided and in one case flat out refused to answer the question that Ifill posed, and that didn't look good. I thought what she did say was good, but I would have rather heard her response on bankruptcy than her avoid it altogether and talk about energy. My opinion (or my guess) on why she may have done this is because her opinion does not jive with that of McCain's and she can not in good conscience say what he wants her to say and she can not contradict him either.
What I loved; she called Biden's "fairness" redistribution of wealth. She called the Obama / Biden plan in Iraq waving a white flag. She said looking to the past is not change and attempted to diffuse his constant drum beat of Bush / McCain. And she reminded Biden that he once said he would have been honored to serve as VP for McCain. I like how she asked him if she could call him Joe. I like how when they were talking about raising taxes on $250K plus folks, she pointed out that that would include small business owners, and how that hinders them and stops the creation of jobs. And she corrected him when he said that the General in Afghanistan said that the surge wouldn't work in that conflict. Granted, she got the name wrong, but if Obama can misspeak and call himself a Muslim and that there's 57 states in the union, than I think we can give her a pass. She just mispronounced, and in her defense she's probably never met the man.
I like how she gave a shout-out to kids in Wasilla. And I know that makes a lot of elitist, "we don't need someone to have a beer with in the White House" folks irritated and they roll their eyes at me for being so obviously down-home and folksy. They want someone more polished, more ivy-league, more elite.
And I don't. I really like Sarah Palin. And I can't wait for her to run for President. Honestly, right now I feel like an Obama victory is emminent, and no amount of Sarah-infused McCain is going to beat him. His vote on the bailout clinched that for him.
You can't say "I'm going to line item and call out those that want needless earmarks" and then vote for the biggest tax and power grab this country has ever seen.
